Great instrumental work, solid vocal parts in spite of a tired sounding Bruce.
I absolutely agree this album gives the impression of Steve being dominant and Bruce not being into it.
it really goes to show what can happen when the singer is not into the recording (and/or being kind of a turd).

Yep, if Bruce was on point this album would have been so much better. As it is, it's just a little sad. The songs where Bruce is on point (Wasted Years, SIASL, Alex) are leaps and bounds ahead of the others.

Part of it is also that Steve’s vocal writing was particularly bad on this album. Wordy lyrics, monotonous melodies, etc. There is a bit of a chicken and egg situation though. He has these issues on other albums, but I’m not sure if it’s worse here or if Bruce’s weakness exacerbated it. We’ve heard other examples of weaker singers not handling Steve’s writing well (Virtual XI). Bruce sounds best to me on the three Adrian songs, which also supports the idea that Steve’s writing is partly to blame. Or Bruce also could’ve still been holding a grudge about his songs being left off.

On another topic, my pick for “old song to bring back” from this album would be Sea of Madness. I would take this live over Alex in a heartbeat. I would really like to hear the song with the fullness of three guitars, a more matured Bruce, and Janick playing the solo.

My guess is both. It’s probably this album that cemented Bruce and Adrian's strong songwriting relationship.

Voting for The Legacy, Moonchild, The Clairvoyant, Only The Good Die Young and Sea Of Madness.

Sea Of Madness is way below the other SIT songs.

You can tell that Bruce isn’t always “on” on this album, but I wouldn’t even call these performances “bad”. The music and the magic of the album otherwise makes up for it regardless, with a handful of exceptions.

What exactly is the point of voting for two of the remaining four AMOLAD songs if three of them must be promoted anyway? Apart from the pure pleasure of it, I mean. Or am I missing something?

In that case it's probably because they want to protect the other two and don't care which song is the third to get promoted.

It depends on whether you’re trying to specifically game the final result, or if you’re just registering what you think are the weaker tracks left from the album.

If someone votes for Lord Of Light and The Legacy, they’ve increased the likelihood that the unpromoted song will be one of those two, but they haven’t personally budged the odds on which of those two it might be. If you felt more strongly about the specific result, you might want to only pick one of them.

Somewhere in time is musically the most interesting album in the catalog for me.
The playing is superb, Adrian and Davey are so tasteful, and Steve and Nicko are so locked in and absolutely on fire.

I don’t think Bruce is lacklustre per se in his performances - he kills on Stranger for example - but I do agree that the Achilles heel here are the vocal melodies - particularly on Steve’s songs.

In relation to the poll, I am highly disappointed that the new blood in Maidenfans hasn’t seemed to elevate the love for Sea of Madness. It is one of Maiden‘s all-time best bar none. Heavy riff morphing into one of the best choruses H ever wrote. The lines Steve plays under both the chorus and pre-chorus are the perfect counterpoint to the melody. And the solo/instrumental breakdown is the entire band (even Bruce’s riffing before the main riff kicks in again) in lockstep and on top of their game. One of my very favourite musical sections ever.

I agree with this. Can't vote now, though - it's been a while since I listened to these albums.
