But that's because Prowler is a great track, with all the qualities you describe. The rest of the album hardly continues in that vein, does it? Running Free, CtH... not really the same caliber I don't think. Also, not sure if I really expect a bunch of old guys in their 60's to be full of the same drive & aggression as they were 40 years ago. Their music really should have changed; it would be awful if they had just made a whole pile of albums in the 80's that all sounded like the debut. And then continued that up until today. Likewise, the post-2000 material should sound different to the 80's and 90's material. Of course, you're entitled to think it all of poorer quality... and lacking in balls.

I never said the music should not have changed. My post was especially ignited by the complete lack of recognizing all the qualities when reading a "Adrian Smith is not on it" post. Yeah, every few years I get a bit hyperbolic because of such nonsense.

Want to have the The X-Factor and Iron Maiden in the top 10?
Vote for The Final Frontier, people!

I recognize the qualities that the debut has, but what you like about it is largely what I don’t like about it. The songwriting isn’t very good. Most of the lyrics are flat-out dumb. Stratton’s guitar work doesn’t appeal to me in the same way that Adrian Smith’s does. It feels like a different band, and a noticeably worse one.

You seem to talk about this as if my point was “Adrian Smith isn’t on it, so it’s bad”. That’s not the order of thinking, though. It’s “this isn’t very good, and when I think about why I don’t like it as much, one reason is the lack of finesse in the songwriting and guitar playing that Adrian brings to the table”. Even on Killers where Adrian didn’t do any songwriting, the step up in quality is very noticeable to me. Some of it is production, some of it is the songs themselves, and some of it is Adrian’s style being in the mix.

You obviously like the debut. Good for you. I think it’s weak.

No need for that. That first tiebreaking round had the albums tied in every aspect (had the same number of votes in every round and in total), this time it's not the case.
