I'm Starting from Powerslave

I don't like Powerslave very much either. Sure, it has some of Maiden's best ever tracks on it -Aces High, Two Minutes To Midnight, Powerslave, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner- but with the exception of Flash Of The Blade, you can toss everything else in the bin, in my opinion. Losfer Words is catchy, but nothing more than that, in my opinion. The Duellists seems to have been written at haste and has one of Maiden's worst instrumental sections ever, in my opinion. As for Back In The Village, I'd rather not even start.

I tried to emphasise the fact that the above said is my own personal opinion, nothing more, nothing less. Since I'm not attacking anybody else's opinion here (merely phrasing my own), I'd be grateful if you would refrain from doing so yourself too.
 
Actually, it bothered me a bit that mods react so quickly in this topic (in defense of Hissy_Fit?), where they didn't do that in the Maiden vs Priest-topic (where Mysterio is entitled to open that topic), after some negative comments were made.

All said in this topic was at least as innocent.

So mods, I'd appreciate it if you'd be more consequent.

That's not what I said, mate.

They react in this topic, but not in the other one, in the same manner, as a mod. I don't get that.
 
To say it in a more simple way: Where was the defense for Mysterio in the Priest vs Maiden topic? It was in this topic, so why not there?

Perhaps you regard them as different matters, I really see parallels. I have no means to offend anyone either, but I just like to see more consequent moderating, if possible. Just my 2 cents.
 
Mysterio's defence, in my opinion, was the fact that a proper discussion evolved from the thread despite the initial reply.
 
You're right about that, but in this topic the discussion could/can also still continue in a proper way.
 
Who says it wouldn't? It looked like this could have shifted to a discussion about the Powerslave album...
 
So the difference is that the mods react here (early) and not in the other mentioned topic.

It was just my interpretation, I experienced it from my point of view like this.

Oh my!! I wish all the albums i "didn't like very much" in my collection had the best part of 30 minutes worth of killer stuff on  :innocent:

I sometimes think people expect too much from Maiden. Only sometimes though.

When a band sets such high standards, and more often than not meets them, expectations are bound to be high  :) Four of the eight tracks on Powerslave (Aces High, Two Minutes, Powerslave and Rime) are some of the band's best, Losfer Words is a catchy song too but i've never taken to the other three, they always seem like filler to me. Still with 5 out of the 8 being so good, I'd consider Powerslave still to be a very good album.
 
Alright then. To call Maiden’s longest and at that point most innovative track (transforming the poem into a heavy metal epic) standard without any further explanation, I simply found laughable. It was a short laugh, but it couldn’t be surpressed, at that moment.

To say it sounded like something that "should have been on SSOASS" I find not that well argumented either, since Powerslave is from 1984 and SSOASS from 1988. Besides, I don't understand it, because Hissy_Fit seems to like SSOASS (she is glad Rime is not on it). Then how is possible that she dislikes Rime?

About Rime itself, instead of "standard", I rather like to think about the following keywords:

..threatening, thundering, powerful, overwhelming, marching, nice harmonies, thrilling solos, haunting lyrics, fast rhythm guitars...
 
The Duelist keeps getting ignored and it is an AWESOME track. I don't care too much for the supposed "best" tracks like Aces high and 2 minutes, just because they are concert standards and singles I don't think makes them "good". And Rime picks up after the second part where the solo sound very similar to that of the Duelist's :D I like the whole thing though, I'm a sucker for longer songs.

It was sarcasm and I don't speak fluent smiley. Sorry. Really, it was commentary on other public commentary that that is where the idea for the song came from.

I have always loved Back in the Village; that song gets slammed a lot but it's one of my favorites on Powerslave. I now openly submit to any beatings people want to give me for this. My opinion won't change.  :)
 
My take on Rime is that it is one of the only songs that actually gives me chills when listening to.  The live version (IMO) is much better, but after the slow part, when the rain starts to fall, and the mariner knows that he may be saved, I can see that in my mind's eye, and it is powerful to me.

I am a fan of the poem "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and I just thought that the rendition was mediocre.
Maiden take a lot of inspiration from literature. They gave us To Tame a Land, inspired by Dune by Frank Herbert, which despite a couple of bad rhyming couplets was an incredible song. Dune is a long and complicated book, and was hard to put into a song but they did it. And they did a pretty good job.
Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a complex poem, and I can understand that it also must have been difficult to hammer into a song. But even though they tried, I listen to it over and over, and I just can't stomach it...

Am I allowed to compare Rime to Hallowed Be Thy Name? If so, I thought that Rime was rendered inferior in comparison. The lyrics are stronger and more meaningful and the guitar work digs in much further than Rime ever could.
But I don't think I can really compare Rime to Hallowed, because Rime is based on a poem and is longer.
