Reading the lyrics again, I agree with Perun. True, some lyrics do evoke certain images of the sort LC describes. And, as Iron Maiden is an English band, the song no doubt reflects an English perspective. Nevertheless, the song is plainly intended to be more universal in scope than merely the experience of a British soldier in World War Two. LC may have overlooked the very first line of the song: "It's the same in every country...".
I also think it is overly simplistic to label the song "pro-war" or "anti-war" or "patriotic" or not. It speaks to the universal experience of soldiers. While the reference to "shores of tyranny" suggests that the song may be about what we would consider a "just" war, the experience of a soldier is probably not much different either way. The tone of the song -- if not each and every image it evokes -- would apply just as well to a German submariner or a Japanese soldier defending Iwo Jima as it would to a British (or American or Canadian or Australian) soldier invading Normandy.
I do agree with LC when he describes the "what's the difference, all the same" lyric as referring to being "brothers in arms." The military histories I have read powerfully argue the point that, regardless of why someone signs up to be a soldier -- and different people may have many different reasons -- their psychological motivations when actually in combat are remarkably similar, namely, they are primarily concerned about not letting down their comrades.

Good grief. ESPECIALLY Rime of the Ancient Mariner. It's so corny. The worst track on the album. It sounded like something that should have been on SSOSS. But luckily not.
Powerslave, in my opinion, was not their best work. But then again, it's not their worst. I think I hand that title over to Killers.

The Rime is not the kind of song I can get into every day due to its length and a definitive need for a high attention span. However, when I'm ready for it, it really rocks! As far as the Powerslave album not getting a good opinon by Hissy_Fit, that's one person's opinion. I've come to think of it as the best of their 80s work -- most of the time.
