If Iron Maiden had to replace Nicko..

I'd go further than that and say you can't have a non-English drummer. Didn't Steve allegedly reject Doogie White as a potential singer in the 90s because he's Scottish?

What about Robin Guy who has played with a lot of different bands... including Bruce Dickinson's on the 2002 summer tour?

No, wait, I've got a better idea! :D

Hahaha he would still have contributed to the song writing more than Nicko ever did! If we're going for ex members, it him, Doug or Rebel. With Rebel we would have 2 original band members, unheard of since 1976!

I hope they retire if Nicko ain't up for it anymore, but if they were to replace him, add Phil Rudd, Mikkey Dee or Matt Sorum, someone who have been around the block before..

I think the only way maiden would carry on is if they lose one of the the guitarists, musically it wouldn't be a big issue, unless it was Dave perhaps. If they lose any other members it would be the end for sure..

I agree with this. If one of the guitarists calls it quits then as long as the rest were up for carrying on I think they would stick around. If anyone else left or more than one guitarist then it's over. I think at this stage no one has the appetite to get a new member in, go through auditions, rehearsals and get to know someone new. They e all been together so long now and know so much about each other that they must be used to each other's quirks and feel comfortable with how they write music and choose songs. To have someone new thrown into the mix who might not gel properly is not something I think the band would entertain these days.

They have enough of a legacy that if it all had to end tomorrow they will go out on a high leaving a wealth of music for generations to come to live and enjoy. They would be remembered as the greatest heavy metal band that walked the earth and rightly so. If they want to and can carry on for a few more years then I can't see their star fading at all until they themselves decide it's the end. Since the reunion they have arguably been bigger and more successful than they were in their 80's Prime.

Is it just me or is Portnoy the go-to suggestion whenever a replacement for a metal drummer is mentioned?

Not just you. Makes sense though, he has a lot of range as a musician and is a workaholic.

So, Tosin Abasi would have been acceptable as a guitarist?

Tosin Abasi in Iron Maiden? Get ready for the gallopping riffs to be turned into slap sections.

I wouldn't pick anybody.

As Steve has said numerous times, if Nicko (or any one of them, for that matter) decides to retire, then they should bow out gracefully and call it quits.

Besides that fact, Nicko is pretty unique as a player, and pretty much irreplaceable at this point (unless they can find an ex-jazz/blues session drummer with a machine-gun right foot who's spent the past 30 years playing in a massively prolific prog-tinged metal band).
No one listens to Nicko. We don't when he states something in an interview. And (perhaps also the band) when he says Maiden should go on with another.
