Iced Earth

I saw Volbeat at Sonisphere two years ago and they were pretty good. I'm not a fan of their music but their performance was good considering they were on the main stage at midday. Although if I go in October I don't know if I would stick around to watch them.

Volbeat has to be the most overrated band I've ever heard or seen live.

Iced Earth on Wacken 2014.

And continuing the Sabaton/Grave Digger side-line talk, last friday, they met again on Wacken, on the True Metal Stage

12:15 - 13:15 Tristania
14:45 - 15:45 Powerwolf
17:15 - 18:15 Pretty Maids
19:45 - 20:45 Sabaton
22:30 - 00:00 Doro
01:45 - 03:00 Grave Digger

I hope it's more varied than Dystopia, which was solid, but IMO not memorable at all. I want Iced Earth to take a risk with something, which they haven't done since the Gettysburg trilogy. Here's hoping the new album delivers!

I expect it to be just as uninspired and forced as Dystopia with more lame Barlow imitations. Who knows, maybe it'll be half decent.

I like 'Dystopia'. It is a hell of a lot better than the nonsense that was Barlow's cameo return a.k.a 'Something Wicked Part 2: The Crucible of Man'.

I could agree with that, but that ain't saying much. Those Something Wicked albums are the worst things IE has done IMO. Yes, including the debut.

The debut album is ok. It suffers from having a poor vocalist but 'Curse the Sky' and 'When the Night Falls' are tremendous songs. As for the Something Wicked albums, I think the whole storyline is ridiculous and changing singers between parts 1 and 2 didn't help. I prefer part 1 to part 2.

I don't like the debut much at all, but at least they were trying. It was made back when it sounded like they actually cared. I can't remember which of the SW albums I preferred but both were pretty bad. Change of singers was also irritating. Didn't help that Barlow was totally phoning that one in. They should've just stuck with Ripper.

There were a few good moments on each album, particularly 'The Clouding' (part 1) and 'Come What May' (part 2).

I wonder how long Stu will last in Iced Earth. I like him as their singer but the lifespan of Jon's henchmen isn't great. No doubt sooner or later Jon will find out that Stu voted for Obama or that one of his ancestors killed a confederate during the Battle of Gettysurg.

I actually hated the Clouding, but Come What May was the highlight of the entire series, yea.

My guess is that Stu's going to blow out his voice before the next tour and he'll be forced to leave. By the end of the Dystopia tour it was already starting to really deteriorate.
It doesn't help that most of the time he isn't even in his natural singing voice.

I remember a year ago in Glasgow he didn't sound as good as he had ten months previously in Birmingham and Jon told us that the set was shorter than it would have been otherwise because they had an important DVD to film.
