Iced Earth

I don't know about Tim on Horror show. I can't even begin to fathom how he would have sung the songs. He could do Dracula well, but the other tracks? Meh.

What was Iced Earth's set? I'm seeing them in September and I can't wait!

I might have made a mistake with the order, but these are the songs that I remember.

Dark Saga
Vengeance Is Mine
Burning Times
Declaration Day
Violate
Pure Evil
Dracula
The Coming Curse
Setian Massacre
Ten Thousand Strong
-----------------------
Melancholy (Holy Martyr)
Iced Earth

(That's material from all Iced Earth albums except for (*sigh* of course) "Burnt Offerings")

What was the performance like?

I'm so sad that they don't play stuff from Burnt Offerings.  It's my favourite CD by Iced Earth, and it's got some killer tracks that haven't been properly done live.  I mean there are gems like "Burning Oasis" and "Creator Failure" that didn't even make it onto Alive In Athens!

Schaffer really needs to see that all the fans love Burnt Offerings.

What can I say, it was really good! Brent Smedley always gives a tight performance, the new bass-dude wasn't bad either. The NOTS-songs are all fantastic live, doesn't matter which they chose to play.
Still I missed Stormrider a bit, I always like it when Schaffer walks to the mic "Wanna Right the Storm?!"

One of my most favourite live tracks "Vengeance Is Mine" was played again, I really love that one, it has an enormous kick-ass driving rhythm.

(The only BO song I've ever seen live was "Brainwashed" with its insane riffs.)

Butcher no, but better also no. The same? Perhaps. Matt did “Declaration Day” quite well but you could see that he had a bit more trouble with that high couplet.

Those videos were taken from the large screens that they projecting what was happening up onstage on to. Amazing vocals, the rest of the set was as great, Barlow is just phenomenal.

Rare fan-filmed video footage of ICED EARTH's June 4, 1999 concert in Richmond, Virginia has been posted on YouTube at this location (clips shot and uploaded by YouTube user "acacia70").

Sweet.  The best IE clip uploader (VigoGatsu) got his account deleted because he had the "official" clip of "Desert Rain" uploaded.

I don't know whether it's Iced Earth's fault or the crowd's fault, but that audience looks amazingly unexcited.  Fuck, I'd kill to see Iced Earth live and those people are just standing there like sheep without any appreciation for the band.

Edit: Looks like it was only so in the beginning.  They warm up after the first songs.

Nice clips by the way.  Matt does the Ripper material pretty well, but not as well as Ripper.  Only listened to
Declaration Day
so far, and there he more screamed than sung the really high vocals.  Ripper's singing allowed you to make out the words, Matt's only barely.  But the Matt era stuff is just as good as on Alive in Athens.

I just downloaded Crucible of Man (it leaked online.) I still need to give it time to sink in, but so far I quite like it. It's probably Iced Earth's heaviest and least melodic album, or at least second after Burnt Offerings. The riffing is great as always, as are the drumming and the bass. Barlow sounds excellent, though I think he sounded better with Pyramaze. It has some of the problems that Framing Armageddon had, like too much palm muting and layered vocals, but to a much lesser extent than on Framing Armageddon. It has some of the atmospheric qualities of Framing Armageddon, but mostly it's just straightforward metal. Overall, this album doesn't disappoint but I wouldn't put it up with Iced Earth's best work.

I think more or less the exact same as you.

I feel a lot of the songs are forced, but there are still some great moments.

I just listened to the whole Something Wicked series this morning, and not only does it work perfectly as a concept, somehow the two albums actually make each other better. The useless final tack of Framing Armageddon and intro to Crucible of man actually make a great segue piece when put together. And the chage of singers actually works perfectly with the changing moods of the albums.

That's quite the insight, I'll have to pick all three of them up one of these days. I've actually been putting off getting the last IE albums due to the mix reactions and my lack of funds. I've been investing in "new" bands.
