Iced Earth

Just listened to it, was about to post.  It is a must listen for IE fans, because the new tour sounds AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just heard the beginning of it. They did those re-recordings because they didn't have anything else to accompany the single.

Sounds logical, but then, that doesn't make the remixed songs nor the decision to record them any better.

I neither said it's right or wrong. It was an objective conclusion, if you like. :P

it wasn't directed at you, just a general statement over peoples general gripe over such procedure.

Because it is a big "Fuck You!" to the guy/chick who sang on the original. At least if it's only a few years after the original release.

I don't think so. They are not responsible for the other person's feelings, they are in the business of making music and if they want to rerecord some of it well they can knock themselves out. I like it, because I don't have to get live recordings to hear the old songs with the new singer, because while I do like Live albums I still enjoy studio recordings more.

Why do I live in Canada?

For that matter, IE is supporting *MAIDEN* twice in Spain.

And I'm still in Canada...

Aww come on, they can go further north than that!  It would be great if they could tour Scandinavia together!

They won't, since Sweden Rock will be their only show in Sweden, and I don't think they'll play Norway this year, but we'll see.

You're talking about Iced Earth or Judas Priest?  Priest is playing their own gig in Finland, a festival in Sweden, and both an own gig and a festival in Norway.  Iced Earth on the other hand has announced no Scandinavian dates AT ALL.  I had the impression that IE is fairly popular in Sweden so I would assume that they would come to Sweden, but then again the whole band's completely underground in Finland, so I don't know.  But it would be quite stupid of IE to skip the most metal area of Europe (Scandinavia) completely.  As I said, they haven't announced any shows or festivals in Scandinavia, so I have a feeling they're saving it up for one announcement for the whole region.

They've booked the whole of late June and early July, which means that if they're going to come to Scandinavia at all, it'll be in late July or early June.  Since they're already doing some gigs with Priest (and some festivals in addition to the four announced gigs), I have a feeling that it's in June in support of Priest.  They have a nice gap of a whole month there, where they would easily fit for support of Priest in Scandinavia.

But then again, this may just be my wishful logic :innocent:

It is a solid set list, not stellar, but really solid. I'm still pissed at what they played when they came to phoenix. What a horrible show in every aspect possible...

Denise Grollmus from the Cleveland Scene has written an extensive article (4 pages) on singer Tim "Ripper" Owens (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, ex-JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH), featuring quotes from a number of Tim's associates from the Ohio metal scene.

On ICED EARTH:

While Owens was comfortable being bossed around, he wanted to tour more. He also didn't like [ICED EARTH mainman Jon] Schaffer's constant derogatory comments about his time in JUDAS PRIEST. "He hated that I was called the Ripper," Owens says. "He said that my era of PRIEST just sucked and that the songs were bad. It was tense."

After one more album, Schaffer replaced Owens with [his predecessor], just last year. "It was two weeks before Christmas, and he sent this press release out," Owens says. "I didn't even know he was going to announce it. I was pretty upset by how it was handled."

ARTWORK AND TITLE OF NEW FULL-LENGTH ALBUM REVEALED
IcedEarth.com has posted the cover art for the band’s forthcoming full-length studio album, "The Crucible of Man – (Something Wicked Part II)" which continues where their 2007 release, "Framing Armageddon – (Something Wicked Part I)" left off. "The Crucible of Man" features the return of frontman Matt Barlow who was Schaffer’s original voice of choice to introduce the "Something Wicked" saga back in 1998 as a trio of songs which concluded their album, "Something Wicked This Way Comes."

While the 1998 album provided a general overview of the story Schaffer has been conceptualizing for well over a decade, the saga is being fully brought to life with the release of the back-to-back conceptual albums "Framing Armageddon" and "The Crucible of Man." While both albums provide answers to mysteries the previous releases would create, the timeliness of the story in today’s world is guaranteed to keep people thinking and guessing. Schaffer’s ability to convey the central themes and events of the story without always revealing exactly “why” characters’ decisions are made and “how” events come to pass, will keep fans of the saga coming back as future mediums for the "Something Wicked" storyline are revealed.

A finalized tracklisting for "The Crucible of Man" and audio interview with Jon Schaffer covering the new material will be featured at IcedEarth.com later this month. The band will begin rehearsals next week for a run of dates in June as direct support for Judas Priest in Europe, as well as the Hellfest, Bang Your Head, Graspop, and Gods of Metal European festivals.

"The Crucible of Man" is due for a late August or early September release on Steamhammer/SPV. The release will then be followed by a North American tour that kicks-off in September and features an appearance as headliner for the ProgPower USA IX festival in Atlanta, Georgia on September 27. The North American dates will be announced at IcedEarth.com when they are confirmed.

The single from the new album is titled, "I Walk Among You" and is being released worldwide this week by Steamhammer/SPV and features the new track, "I Walk Alone, " as well as three additional songs from “Framing Armageddon” with new vocal performances by Matt Barlow. All tracks can be listened to in their entirety at both the band’s official website and MySpace page with exception of the track, “'A Charge to Keep'” which is an iTunes exclusive.

So for me that makes it Gamma Ray/Helloween on the 19th and then Iced Earth on the 23rd!

Wow, Gamma Ray and Helloween are still touring together in September?  I saw them last December!  (and no, that is not meant as a reference to the song)  That's one long tour...

I've finally given up on hoping Iced Earth will come to Finland some day so I gave in and looked at the tour setlist.  Also checked a few videos on Youtube.  And I have to say that though Matt is a great singer, he's not really much of a frontman.  Not that Tim was great either from what I've seen, though.

I bought the I Walk Among You EP today, and I have sort of mixed feelings.  The title track is excellent and Matt's vocals fit well on it.  Well, not excellent, though; Tim's would also have fit well, and Matt's vocals aren't noticeably better (like they are on the original SW trilogy).  I don't think the layered vocals suit Matt nearly as much, and Tim just beats Matt on singing those high notes.  Matt is good at singing low, near-growled vocals (e.g. Dante's Inferno), as well as conveying emotion in his singing (e.g. A Question of Heaven).  Tim sings those high parts much more convincingly, and Matt's voice doesn't really add anything new to the mix.  It's obvious the songs were written for Tim, not Matt.  This makes me worried whether Part II will be really all that good, since the songs on that were also written for Tim.

Of the old songs, Matt really butchers Setian Massacre.  However, in The Clouding, his voice really shines, and that song I definitely prefer with Matt.  A Charge to Keep is hardest to judge; Tim nails the chorus much better than Matt, but the pre-chorus vocals Matt does better.

All in all, I'm not that excited Matt is back anymore.  I'm pissed with how Jon threw out Tim (though it's nothing new...), and how Matt is still not committed to the band properly because of his police work (which I assume is the reason they have such a large gap in touring in early June and late July).  If he's back, he should be properly back, not this half-arsed bull****.  At least Tim was committed to the band.

I'm actually now considering how Horror Show would have sounded with Tim...
