I like the songs and the riffs on Burnt Offerings. The only one that doesn't do much for me is Burning Oasis, and even that one isn't too bad. I love the emotion on the album, the energy, the aggression, and the atmosphere. It's the only IE album that actually makes me feel something. You can tell Schaffer is angry. That's one of my issues with the recent albums: they sounds emotionless and sterile. Burnt Offerings is the opposite of that.
I also like the lyrical themes, which is saying a lot for a band with generally poor lyrics. They sound more personal to me or at least (in the case of Last December and Diary) interesting. The one exception is Dante's Inferno, which is a bit uncreative lyrically. Although if I was to imagine the soundtrack to the poem, this sound would be it. So it works musically. And just in general, I like the themes on this album a lot better than the Set Abominae stuff that got introduced later, which is just stupid IMO. It's more appealing to me than the Spawn stuff also, although I'll admit Spawn is an interesting character and I think they did an alright job with him on Dark Saga.
But I get that a lot of this won't matter if the songs don't do anything for you.
