Burnt Offerings and Dark Saga are night and day.

A lot is stripped from Dark Saga. Anger, aggression, riff madness, complexity of rhythms, high piercing screams, sudden changes/variety in the songs.

Still a good record, but I prefer more original, more challenging and less simplistic Iced Earth.

Dark Saga is good but it sounds a bit flat to me. My main problems with this album are punctuated in A Question Of Heaven, which is why I'm not a huge fan of that song. It does have some great moments though and I still enjoy listening to it, definitely won't vote for it until the debut and Dystopia are gone.

Burnt Offerings is much more exciting to me though. It often fights for my #1 spot.

Dark Saga is certainly more simplistic, and the production can sound a bit sterile, but I just don't get the Burnt Offerings love. I don't like half of the songs on Burnt Offerings. I like a lot of the riffs, but the songs are average. On the flipside, I love many songs on Dark Saga, whereas some of the riffs leave something to be desired.

I like the songs and the riffs on Burnt Offerings. The only one that doesn't do much for me is Burning Oasis, and even that one isn't too bad. I love the emotion on the album, the energy, the aggression, and the atmosphere. It's the only IE album that actually makes me feel something. You can tell Schaffer is angry. That's one of my issues with the recent albums: they sounds emotionless and sterile. Burnt Offerings is the opposite of that.

I also like the lyrical themes, which is saying a lot for a band with generally poor lyrics. They sound more personal to me or at least (in the case of Last December and Diary) interesting. The one exception is Dante's Inferno, which is a bit uncreative lyrically. Although if I was to imagine the soundtrack to the poem, this sound would be it. So it works musically. And just in general, I like the themes on this album a lot better than the Set Abominae stuff that got introduced later, which is just stupid IMO. It's more appealing to me than the Spawn stuff also, although I'll admit Spawn is an interesting character and I think they did an alright job with him on Dark Saga.

But I get that a lot of this won't matter if the songs don't do anything for you.

band with generally poor lyrics
Pfffff

I think the Somethng Wicked/Set Abominae story is one of the best concepts in metal. And Dark Saga/Spawn story too. Burnt Offerings has no concept so I don't really care about its lyrics.
