A lot of my defense for the first and (to a lesser extent) second albums are the live recordings. While Stormrider holds up on its own, those songs are really immortalized on AiA and I consider those to be the definitive versions. In fact, I consider pretty much every song on AiA to be the definitive version, it's that good. But especially with those first two albums, it really proves that the songs are strong and hold up against the best tracks recorded with Barlow. So yea, the singing on those two albums might not be great and the production is definitely not something to be desired, but when it comes down to it, it's the songs that count. The post Horror Show albums are recorded with pretty great production, good singing, and a lot of the songs have good live recordings. Yet the songs still don't hold up. Which is why I won't vote for the debut until all of those albums are gone.
