As much as I love Barlow and find Ripper to be quite annoying, the songs on Framing Armageddon are better than the majority of Crucible. Other than Come What May and I Walk Alone, and maybe Harbinger and Crucify, Crucible is nothing but filler. Framing has Setian, Charge to Keep, Ten Thousand, Order of the Rose, Clouding, Domino Decree, and When Stars Collide.

I don't love FA by any means. It's full of filler interludes. As loathe as I am to defend a Ripper album, it's certainly not the worst of Iced Earth's recordings. Not by a mile.

Right, despite Crucible having the best song between the two, you still have to wade through an entire album of garbage to get to it. FA is pretty terrible too, but it has an okay start and gets worse from there. Crucible starts bad and doesn't get any better until the very last song.

The difference is: those singers perfectly fit the music of those bands. With Iced Earth's early albums, both through deduction and literal evidence from the band leader, the music is clearly demanding a certain vocal sound that the singers are incapable of delivering. Jon Schaffer agrees with me. Lawyered.
I think that both the vocalists on the first two albums are absolutely fine. They just about right for the atmosphere and attitude of those albums. I'm not saying either is a better vocalist than Barlow of course but they did sound good enough for those two albums. I don't think either was kicked out for being a fundamentally bad vocalist anyway. Apparently Gene Adam was kicked out for refusing to take singing lessons and John Greely was booted out for being a bigot and impossible to work with.

Dream Theater would sound so much better with Russell Allen.
So would most bands, but the point was that Dream Theater can still sound great without a great singer,

If your band leader demands you take singing lessons...you are a bad vocalist for that band.

Greely sounds alright on Stormrider. I can listen to that album. But those songs sound infinitely better under Barlow's command.

I'm still confused as to when James LaBrie became considered a sub-par singer? He can be annoying at times, but the guy can sing his ass off.

I said he's average, not sub-par (which is a metaphor I dislike because that's a good thing in golf!). He can sound great at times but a lot of the time he could do an awful lot better.

Framing Armageddon

Live, I can agree, he can be spotty on some of the highs (but who isn't once they're over the hill?). On albums, the man is a beast, especially for someone who continued to record and tour while suffering problems with his vocal cords.
