GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

Kyuss is no Spiritual Beggars, but, thankfully, they're no Obituary either.

Virgin Steele just doesn't do it for me. I'm going with Invictus here, but I really don't care all that much. I look forward to voting against them in the near future.

I've enjoyed most of the power metal albums that have appeared in this game so far, and Karma by Kamelot is no exception.

The last match is a tough one, but I'm giving the edge to Faith No More. Yngwie is still really good though and I won't be disappointed if he ends up pulling out the win here.

Kyuss defeats Obituary, writing the obituary for the band's chance at winning the GMAC. Next up for Kyuss is Thorns.
The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Pt 1 beats Invictus. Virgin Steele next faces Diabolical Masquerade.
Kamelot barely holds on against W.A.S.P., and we'll see W.A.S.P. again in a few seconds.
Last, Faith No More squeaks past Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force. Yngwie returns in League 13.

Only match up which could be close for me is the second. Rainbow's debut has some great tracks but Crimson Glory's debut blew me away, I really need to look into their other albums... I've had a friend nagging me to do that for a year or so.

Led Zeppelin - Now your talking, first genuinely huge record to appear, I'm not the biggest Zep fan and this isn't one of my favourite albums by them but there's loads of great stuff on it, In My Time of Dying, Trampled Under Foot, Wanton Song and of course Kashmir

Royal Hunt - not awful, quite hooky for this kind of stuff but unfortunately for them it's a real mismatch in this round

Led Zeppelin with the win

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow - Just like buses, two huge albums come along at once. A must have album for any heavy metal fan. Man on the Silver Mountain, Black Sheep of the Family, Temple of the King and Sixteenth Century Greensleeves all brilliant among others.

Crimson Glory - another mismatch which is unfortunate for them as they'd have beaten quite a few other bands that have advanced, opening riff sounds a bit like Zep's Babe I'm gonna leave you, this is pretty decent, although like Virgin Steele I can't help but make the comparison that they are a clone of the much more well known Queensryche

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow with the win

Celtic Frost - not for me, like a more competent Venom

Edguy - good god the keys, not too bad when the verse kicks in, quite Queensryche again not just the vocal, chorus is terrible though with the choir vocals,

Edguy with the win, I like neither too much but the Geoff Tate impression during the verse is good enough to get the win

W.A.S.P. - third great album this round, altough I fear the ballad as the choice of song might turn off people who are only scratching the surface, Maneater the only weak song on this and even then it would have been one of the better ones if it had been on the last command. The Heretic/The Lost Child, The Headless Children, The Real Me, Mean Man, Forever Free, Rebel in the FDG all great, best album this round and there's two other pretty great albums this time.

Savatage - just spotted the album cover , looks like an ad from the 80's for Timothei shampoo , track not bad really until the weak chorus

W.A.S.P. with the TKO

EDIT: I even accidentally left out Thunderhead from the list of great tracks on the Headless Children

The Royal Hunt I once heard back in the early 90's was somehow of a symphonic and more metalized version of Europe. And so it seems like they kinda continued that way. Well... at least they sound way more authentic and less cheesier when compared with some the crappy bands that came after them threading somehow similar ground. Problem is they found Physical Graffiti on their way and (although I don't consider this to be a metal band or record) when you're facing a legend like Led Zeppelin there is zero chance you can beat In My Time of Dying, Sad Again or Trampled Under Foot with such modest stuff as Royal Hunt.

Rainbow are one of the 70's metal pivotal acts that curiously began as a solo project from Mr. Blackmore and the debut album's consistency reveals that quite a bit when compared with the following two classic releases. Nevertheless it is a great record with some really cool song. But most important than that it gave us an all time classic in Man On The Silver Mountain and exposed ex Elf vocalist Ronnie James Dio's immense talent to a broader audience. But on The other hand (and albeit being a way less influential heavy metal band) Crimson Glory's debut is simply one of the best records from the 80's in its genre as I stated before. So I'll have to pick the latter.

Ah! Edguy... already spoke about them when commenting Royal Hunt (i.e. " crappy bands that came after them threading somehow similar ground"). Then I must confess I have a bit of a bipolar relation with some Celtic Frost records. Cold Lake for an instance is garbage and (oooooh.... what I'm about to say is going to leave any CF fan here utterly mad) I find To Mega Therion to be really overrated. Not only because it only features an immensely great song (Necromantical Screams) and another that is catchy (Circle Of The Tyrants) but mainly because it sounds absolutely derivative from the band's debut and what I consider to be one of the most influential records ever: Morbid Tales. Not that I'm a huge fan but without this thing there would be no Slayer's Hell Awaits, no Death Metal, and many of the extreme metal would surely be entirely different. Furthermore the groove and heaviness of slowest stuff like Visions Of Mortality, Dethroned Emperor and the superb Procreation Of The Wicked is simply great. Not my favorite Celtic Frost record - Into The Pandemonium and Monotheist are my picks - but a really good album and an obvious win.

Already gave my two cents about Savatage's record and how they're as much competent as unmoving. On The other hand: The Headless Children. Yes! Now THIS is a heavy metal album. Being my favorite WASP record of all time it marks an immense change in the band at several aspects (and by change one must read Improvement). Blacky said to hell with all of the glam rock visual cheesiness, partying and cheap horror lyrics, increased even more the already existent quality of their sound, preforming a paradigm revolution in the band that left my jaw on my knees when I first picked this beast back in '89. Dark, heavy, political and way more musically complex and accurate than anything the band has ever composed before, The Headless Children is simply put one of 80's Heavy Metal best records. First there's the drummer change with the amazing Frankie Bannali doing a hell of a job. As for the record itself the opener is perhaps my favorite track and the intensity, dark mood and composing wit these guys display here is simply off the charts! Songs like the title track, Neutron Bomber and Thunderhead follow the same mold and excellence but there are also some heavy rock stuff here in Mean Man, Maneater and Rebel In The FDG that (albeit being way more in the vein of their previous material) are completely devoid of the cheesiness some of these tracks came with. As for the remainder there's an absolutely amazing cover from The Who's The Real Me and curiously enough Forever Free is the only track I consider to be boring and subpar in the whole album. Nevertheless this is WASP at their best and an easy pick. It's a superbly reinvented version fruit of Lawless' vision that wouldn't relent on the following release.

Check Transcendence... IMO it's even better than the already awesome debut. Things derail in Strange And Beautiful (they go all mellow with lots of ballads and stuff). Still some good stuff there like the title track, Promised Land, the superb Star Chamber or the Zeppelinesque Far Away.

Into The Crypts Of Rays has some Venom traits, yes. But the remainder of the record is way different: slower, heavier and way less Motorhead like. It's a thing of its own.
I fear the ballad as the choice of song might turn off people who are only scratching the surface
Absolutely agreed. Forever Free is the less representative song from the tracklist to give someone a glimpse of what the album is all about.

Physical Graffiti is one of my favorite albums of all time, so, yeah.
I'm a little surprised to see Crimson Glory leading the early voting over Rainbow's debut. I guess I don't get the love for CG -- it's better-than-average hair metal, but nothing too special.
I was pleasantly surprised by this early Celtic Frost record, which is waaayy more thrashy than I thought it would be. I had heard some later stuff that sounded more like death/doom, which I didn't love, and I just assumed that's what they did. But I'm digging the faster tempo. Will definitely give this album subsequent spins.
Not really a big fan of either WASP or Savatage, but WASP got robbed in the last round, so I vote for them again.
