GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

Only mentioned it because these guys are being dubbed the "new Opeth" and people may take this comparison a bit too far.
14 Leagues too far ;) It's the only Ne Obliviscaris album in the game, so they certainly aren't the New Opeth...yet.

This is regardless of ranks and leagues. Old Opeth fans are massively liking these guys and dubbing them as the heir to the throne since the band's departure to 70's prog rock. If you go to a prog death metal list these guys are always on the upper ranks.

Pretty Maids are fun with one or two stand out tracks but I appreciate Neurosis for an album gritty in its entirety. I've seen Neurosis in a small and sweaty venue before and they sounded immense.

I'm in a very non-fluffy mood today, so appreciated Ne Obliviscaris' blend of dark/discordant, piano, violin and melodeath. They remind me of fellow Aussie band Be'lakor but are more experimental. I haven't heard them before but will be listening to this album again. Rhapsody are cheesily fun, however, I have a clear favourite here.

Angra all the way, I'm not a tremendous Van Halen fan.

Surprising myself by going for Buckethead once again. He just has more to offer here,

The Neurosis album is an odd collection of screamy stoner rock with a few instrumentals. The vocals are a nonstarter for me, and honestly, even the couple of times that clean vocals show up I’m just not that interested. The Pretty Maids album is only minor league hair metal, but it’s more enjoyable to listen to. Winner: Pretty Maids

The Ne Obliviscaris album covers some interesting sonic ground, but that heaping helping of shitty death vocals on top of everything makes it difficult to care. Yes, there are some clean vocals here, but not enough to make up for the rest of what I have to endure. I normally wouldn’t vote for Rhapsody, but they win by default here. Winner: Rhapsody

This Van Halen album is one of their weakest — almost all filler. There are nice bits here and there, but I can’t imagine myself ever wanting to actually put this record on. The Angra album is pretty solid power metal, so this is an easy choice. Winner: Angra

Unlike Edge Of Thorns from earlier in the game, Gutter Ballet is an exercise in self-indulgence that isn’t even half as cool as it thinks it is. I don’t care for Jon Oliva’s vocals — he’s way too raspy on the high end for me. And the songs are really uneven, with one of the worse album openers I’ve heard in a while. Some of the guitar bits are nice, as is the instrumental “Silk And Steel“, but this is not a very good album overall. The Buckethead album, while not particularly impressing me, is still a solid collection of guitar instrumentals that I would be happy to listen to again. Winner: Buckethead

Neurosis, Ne Obliviscaris (I can see the Opeth similarities), Van Halen and Buckethead. All the matches were stomps for me (except for the third). And only the last one isn't tied, I really wonder who that extra voter is...

The Savatage album was super disappointing after Edge of Thorns, it sounds so pretentious in comparison. Very strong albums aside from that one..

Neurosis has some interesting stuff going on, but I gotta vote for Pretty Maids. Just like that music better.
Rhapsody, but I feel bad about it. Ne Obliviscaris reminds me about all the stuff I dislike in classic Opeth.
I like the Van Halen hits, but as a band I find them incredibly unfulfilling. I don't much like Angra either, but at least I'm a little interested in the full album.
Savatage over Buckethead. Gutter Ballet isn't a great album, but it's always been a guilty pleasure for me. In the end, there's more here for me than on the Buckethead album, which I have nonetheless enjoyed.

A close round! Pretty Maids holds on for a second win, beating Neurosis, who return in League 6.
The only Ne Obliviscaris album is eliminated by Rhapsody, who draw against Amorphis for the next match.
Angra kills a big name as they off Van Halen. Van Halen has three more albums in the GMAC, all in League 5.
Buckethead's minnow run barely ends against Savatage.

Kyuss - crap guitar sound, sounds like elastic bands on a cornflakes box, other than that not bad, got the head nodding, obviously the band were listening to albums like Sabotage and Vol. 4 before recording this, I'll probably give the whole album a spin

Obituary - no fan of this type of music, although I find this crowd to be slightly more palatable than most, not that I'd be disposed to ever listening to them, production is good which is a huge help, you can clearly hear what they are up to

Kyuss
with the win

Invictus - bad intro that doesn't even have any connection to the section that follows, high pitched bass is just such a rip off of Manowar

Marriage of Heaven and Hell - this is a lot better than the above, good hooks and doesn't sound like a copy of Manowar

Marriage of Heaven and Hell with the win

W.A.S.P. - one of my favourite bands, but not a huge fan of the chris holmes era, first album and headless children are great, this album and inside the electric circus are a bit more iffy. Saying that, it has big live hits Wild Child and Blind in Texas

Kamelot - This is like if someone wrote a parody of heavy metal, I can't believe that a band actually peddle this stuff in earnest, but then again they call themselves Kamelot with a K so it's a classic case of nominative determinism.

W.A.S.P. with the win

Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force - Just Rainbow with a worse vocalist and worse musicians, Yngwie is really just Blackmore if he practiced a lot. Richie has edge because he's always this close to being a train wreck, whereas Yngwie has no edge as he literally always sounds like he's playing in his pipe and slippers

Faith No More - opinion given in earlier round, love how all the musicians have completely different sounds that shouldn't compliment each other but do. Jim Martin is the key as his guitar playing is so simple and no nonsense, they lost so much when they got better guiatrists, the balance between the rest of the instruments got lost

Faith No More with the win

Rising Force has some stunning guitar work on it though. I'd say he does feign an edge pretty well, but accept it's probably fake...

FNM are one of my favourite bands, and Mike Patton my favourite vocalist by quite some distance. But, tRT is maybe their worst album, for me...

In this match-up I'll vote Malmsteen.
