GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

Dio, although I have nothing against Candlemass (except for not being Dio).

The second match was tough because while Helloween does little for me, I’ve always found Kill ‘Em All to be massively overrated and have never enjoyed Metallica’s simple open-E brand of thrash. However, I went with Metallica because this album laid the groundwork for what they became through the ‘80s.

Priest, easily.

I’m no Ozzy fan, but it’s about time this insanely overrated Megadeth album died a fiery death. Sabbath.

This Dio album is pretty consistently strong and punchy (with the exception of “Shame On The Night”). “Rainbow In The Dark” and “Don’t Talk To Strangers” are great, the title track isn’t far behind, and everything on here is at least good. I still feel like this album is slightly overrated, because nothing on here fully knocks it out of the park for me, but it’s good stuff. And so is this Candlemass album, frankly — it’s also consistently good to great, but doesn’t bowl me over. I could probably flip a coin here, but in the end I think Dio is a little more in line with my personal taste. Sorry, Jarvis The Darlmutt, but your half-brother-from-another-great-great-grandmother MckrMidniallataFTBvis The Dragoosefed Pickmoticannon1983’s choice ekes this one out. Winner: Dio

Kill ‘Em All isn’t really my cup of tea — most of Hetfield’s vocals here are too screamy and/or out of key, and the lyrics are often terrible; but when things come together they do work pretty well. The guitar work is consistently strong, which helps. “The Four Horsemen”, “Jump In The Fire”, and “Seek And Destroy” are pretty great, and there’s a strong second tier of songs too, if you can stand Hetfield’s vocals. While this record doesn’t really have any business being this high in the GMAC seeding, it’s still preferable to a mostly bland and weakly written Weikathfest of a Helloween album. Sorry, PotInTheKart420, but @matic22 ’s nominee takes this one. Winner: Metallica

This Judas Priest album is consistently interesting and varied, though nothing on it really blows me away. By contrast, this Guns ‘N Roses album has a handful of fantastic songs and a strong second tier, but then a bunch of filler to pad it out. This is surprisingly close for me, and while I’m tempted to vote GnR because its best songs are so very good, I think the range and consistency of the Priest album are enough to barely squeeze out a victory here. Sorry, The Dissidityn DJ Jaxianialles, but The srFlasch’s choice isn’t trying to please you. Winner: Judas Priest

What do you get when you combine the absence of light with the day of rest? A long fucking nap, that’s what. I know that any serious GMAC contender needs to be laden with harmonica, cowbell, and mouth harp to have a chance of winning, and the Black Sabbath debut certainly checks those boxes, so who knows. Yes, “N.I.B.” is pretty great, and there’s a general atmosphere to the album that’s appealing, but there’s just so much plodding filler on here. It’s one thing to respect your elders, but it’s entirely another to pretend that Grandpa’s still got it when he’s wearing T-shirts for underwear and insisting on calling you Sally. This album was undoubtedly important, and all metal owes it a debt of some sort, but on the merits it’s not something that I would ever want to sit down and listen to in 2021. On the other hand, So Far, So Good...So What! is indisputably a metal album, and it’s one that still kicks your ass in the modern day. Just listen to “Into The Lungs Of Hell” and “Set The World Afire”. “Mary Jane”. “Hook In Mouth”. “In My Darkest Hour”. Do you really think that anything on the Sabbath debut is a better metal song than any of these, much less all of them? If you set aside Sabbath bias and compare these two albums on their musical merits, which one is the better metal album? I think the answer is obvious. Sorry, @Cornfed Hick, but Doctor Doom does as he pleases! Winner: Megadeth

Dio. I really do like Candlemass’ debut and put it at the top of their discography, but Dio at the top of his game blows them out of the water.

Eh, fuck it, I’m gonna vote for Helloween. I love Metallica and couldn’t care less about Helloween, but Kill ‘Em All is immature and nowhere near their best. Plus, I’m sure we’ve got another 3 Metallica albums to go.

Never much cared for GnR, but Appetite is a great album. Sad Wings is better, if overrated as a whole. Priest.

Sabbath. And I swear to Dio, if the album that birthed heavy metal loses to SFSGSW, I’m calling a farce on this entire thing.

Yes! It's called "Black Sabbath".

Although honestly "Into the Lungs of Hell" is probably in the same tier, both great songs.

A more interesting start to this one, with no true runaways. All matches are within five and one is neck and neck!

DISTORTED FIGURES WALK THE STREET IT'S 1999!!! is probably my favorite Megadeth moment but man that Black Sabbath debut is killer. Black Sabbaths initial run of albums are just back to back to back killer

Instead of calling names, set the world afire ;)

GNR closing the gap, Helloween opening a slightly bigger one, and Sabbath starting to run away with it!

So, um, seriously, is there anyone who voted for Black Sabbath in the final match because they thought “War Pigs” was on the album due to the FEC-violating incorrect sample song choice?

I’m starting to feel like Al Gore in 2000 here...

No, you're feeling like Donald Trump in 2020, because you're losing to an actually better candidate and there's no Supreme Court bullshit involved. So Far, So Good... So What? really is emblematic of the title. It's come so far, you keep saying that it's so good, but so what? Black Sabbath's album is much better.

:ok:

SFSGSW has the worst Megadeth lineup, horrible drum sound and Dave's worst vocals performance of past century. Just the title track of Black Sabbath's debut slays all SFSGSW songs combined. In My Darkest Hour is pretty much the only good song on that album and its studio version is inferior due to shit drum sound. Hammersmith 1992 version is way better.

Megadeth does incredibly little for me, while Sabbath's debut doesn't do much either it does a whole lot more for me.

Thanks for completely ignoring my point. If the sample song for SFSGSW had been “Holy Wars” or “Hangar 18” this whole time then I wouldn’t have any concern. Having the sample song represent one of the band’s most famous and popular tracks when it’s not actually on the album is kind of an issue, though, wouldn’t you say?

I highly doubt that the sample song matters at this stage, definitely not when it's between Black Sabbath and Megadeth. It's a metal forum, everyone knows these big names. Still a mistake on LC's part, but it doesn't matter. SFSGSW has done really well in this tournament (way better than it should have IMO) and now it's run up against an opponent that can finally take it down.

If anyone contacts me and says they would like to change their vote due to my mistake, then I will allow it in this limited circumstance.
