GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

Sheesh...I don't like these at all. This will probably be the first round when I won't be listening to any of the full albums.

Hammerfall
Boohwal
Dark Angel
Alcest

This game seems to be really wearing on my patience with over-earnest edgeless power metal. There’s nothing objectively terrible about the Hammerfall song; it fits nicely into the box I mark bland and tolerable. But maybe its my mood, because I just don’t have any patience for it this morning.

“Ooh, scary” Fuck off. Get a life, Burzum. Bland Hammerfall by easy default.

Suffocation is unlistenable. My god, that’s awful.

Boohwal is another one going for that Opeth feel. Not sure if I like it, or if it’s just the false endorphins being released because my ears are so fucking grateful I turned the Suffocation off.

EDIT: I am not going to listen again, or any further, because I didn’t like it enough, but I am surprised to see all the pop comments about Boohwal. That wasn’t the feel I got from the video track at all. Given the comments, it’s likely I‘m the one that missed the point.

I’m not sure if thrash can ever be called bland, but bland thrash is what popped into mind when I listened to Dark Angel. There’s an element of Motörhead to High on Fire that’s going to give them my vote, even though the vocalist certainly doesn’t have Lemmy’s charisma, and the band seems like it’s not quite capable of of playing at the pace it was playing.

No patience for Morbid Angel today. Sorry.
Alcest wins by default, although the music seemed decent enough in a Porcupine Tree kinda way.

Not clear if I’m just not in the right mood, or if this was the worst round of the game. Sure felt like the latter, but I will try to do better next time.

I find this a bizarre comparison.

Yeah, I addressed it with an edit to my post.
But That’s what the early atmosphere of the posted song recalled for me, Opeth at its more soothing moments.

That’s what you get when you make snap judgements based on snippets, but as I’ve said earlier, I’m not Investing a lot of time in music I don’t like.

Also @Magnus Burzum is up there with the black metal I’ll put on every now and then. Varg is fucked up but he’s brilliant at conveying beauty in the noise that’s built around it. Lost Wisdom in particular is one of the best songs I’ve heard from the genre.

So what I'm gathering from the Suffocation vs Boohwal match is nobody actually likes either band. Those voting for Boohwal are doing so because they can't stand listening to Suffocation, and those voting for Suffocation are doing so because they believe Boohwal don't belong here in a metal contest.

I won't lament the loss of Filosofem that much, it's no Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, it's more so the fact that it's losing to a cheesefest Hammerfall album that upsets me.
I agree Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is better, but I think Filosofem is quite good as well.
