GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

OK, music tastes are different, there is no point is discussing them, so I don't even know why I'm writing this.
But Nostradamus... Really?!

OK, main reason I'm spamming is because it defeated Led Zeppelin's - Physical Graffiti. What was that? Metal bias? Why are there then grunge albums defeating metal albums, like Nirvana's In Utero defeating Rammstein's Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da? (OK, I'm really pissed about that one because LIFAD was my nomination and I really, really despise Nirvana.) I saw Priest back in '08 and they played one song from the whole album! One song! (maybe the album's intro went on PA but it doesn't count). That's how much they thought of the album. And don't get me wrong - Long albums: Yes ; Concept albums: Yes ; Long concept albums : Pitfall. Greatest metal album cup and Nostradamus beat 5 albums in a row, come on... And that is from a band which gave us Sad Wings of Destiny, Screaming for Vengace, Painkiller and so on. I mean, I would get Firepower, because it's recent but Nostradamus?

OK, that's it. Rant over. The way it looks now, it will progress even further.
That SOB has more luck in knockout stages than Greece had on EURO 2004.
FFS...

Also voting for Rainbow, because reasons.

Never heard Facelift in full. But if Man in the Box is classic sample from Facelift like Lightning Strikes Twice is classic sample from Virtual XI I'm voting for the first one: Alice in Chains.

Linkin Park. I like Burn, but I heard Hybrid Theory few weeks ago and remembered how fun it was.

But Nostradamus... Really?!
Yeah.

Led Zeppelin are shit.

Liebe isn't top tier Rammstein album.

It's because they are cowards. Is SIT a bad album because Maiden only played 3 songs from it in the 33 years that passed since the album tour?
And that is from a band which gave us Sad Wings of Destiny, Screaming for Vengace, Painkiller and so on. I mean, I would get Firepower, because it's recent but Nostradamus?
I like Nostradamus more than all of those albums bar Painkiller. Firepower has like one song that can stand up to Nostradamus' material.

Facelift may well be the better album but this matchup serves as a reminder of why I love Maiden so much. VXI is probably the worst Maiden album in my book but still makes me feel at home. Alice in Chains is well-produced grunge, as little as I’ve listened to them, but suicidal dreadlock rock doesn’t take me to a place where I want to be. I prefer Maiden’s little garage-recorded safe haven over the hard-living world that AIC and their contemporaries specialised in.

I am really confused. Are we supposed to vote for Facelift because of Bruce bias, Steve playing muppet drums, terrible production, too much repetition OR are we voting for Virtual XI because it is a METAL album cup, it's a more consistent album by one of the most influential bands of the past 40 years.

Both albums are uneven efforts of a band finding their way. There are a couple classics on each but both have a fair amount of filler. Both bands were booed at various times on the respective tours for these albums and neither act resembled these albums within 3 years of their release. The difference is that one happened to have a sound that was in vogue at the time, while the other is fucking Maiden you imbeciles!

You're supposed to pick based on any attribute you deem important :) the discussion is really interesting, though.

Firepower has like one song that can stand up to Nostradamus' material.
More like Nostradamus has one song that can stand up to Firepower’s material.

Respect if you like it but Nostradamus isn’t good IMO. The only song that comes close to Priest’s best is “Prophecy”. Truly fun song and it’s a shame the rest of the record never reaches that same level.

Here are some other highlights:

— I appreciate and kinda enjoy the Italian chorus of “Pestilence and Plague”.
— “Persecution” is the second best song on the album. Dig that chorus.

And that’s all I can think of at the moment. It’s not that there’s a lot wrong with this album, it’s just so boring. There was no need to stretch out the same plodding song type across two hours. No need. There is no fire here, it’s a band out of their comfort zone and failing to push themselves in the way they needed to be pushed. “War” sounds like something I would’ve come up with when I was 10. “Death” has a cool concept and a cool doomy vibe and then makes you wish you were listening to actual doom metal cuz this is legit meh. “New Beginnings” is so fucking saccharine, truly bad. And the lyrics just aren’t very good. Maybe if they were more satirical, which is the impression that I get from “Prophecy”, or more... yknow what, never mind, this is Priest I’m talking about. They are not great lyricists and were never gonna pull off this concept anyway. There is just so much that needs to be overhauled here. Not good.

Compared to Firepower? I’m gonna come out and say it: Firepower is the best Priest album ever. There is no song on that album that doesn’t hit you like a ton of bricks and grab you in a headlock. Even a weaker song like “Flame Thrower” still packs a punch. The sound of that record is the best they’ve ever had. The riffs are monumental. Halford sounds better than he has in nearly twenty years. For the first time in forever the band has actually had fire in their souls. This isn’t just a recapture of the Painkiller era. This is a reinvention of Judas Priest as a band. Finally they are back to writing the music that they write better than everyone else. I respect their attempts to broaden their horizons, but massive concept records aren’t what Priest excel at. They excel at writing catchy metal songs with big riffs and over the top vocals. And this record is that perfectly distilled into just under sixty minutes. Nearly flawless.

Also: I like Virtual XI more than Facelift. The latter is an inconsistent record with some great songs but clearly needed some improvement before the monstrous Dirt. VXI, like Saap said, is very home-y. It’s comforting. It’s comfortable. It’s one of my favorite Maiden records.

But there are fifteen Maiden records in this game, and that’s about eleven too much. At some point I have to sacrifice a fave because it’s more annoying to see these albums everyone has heard bowl over records that are more important / better than they are. It’s what it is.

Well I really like (among others) Futureal, The Clansman, Alone, Persecution, etc... but when we're talking about GREATEST METAL ALBUM EVER let's put it simple:

Fuck Virtual XI and Nostradamus!

There... I said it ;) .

Two ties will be determined at the end of the League, which with the present schedule should start on Christmas Eve and will not be extended for the holiday season.

Rainbow dulls Razor, who are done in the GMAC. It's Gamma Ray next.
Deep Purple pulls it out over Linkin Park, who are back in League 6.
