GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

Well... at least here you know what to do :) .

P.S. : I understand not liking a great portion of In Flames' catalogue (TBF I really hate everything they did from more than a decade now). But Jester Race and Whoracle are really influential albums.
My two favorites are actually Clayman and Reroute to Remain. Too bad those weren't nominated.

You haven't? I can imagine people liking you in flames quite vividly, at least in the past.

:ninja:
Kinda reminds me of my army days, apologies for going there, a rookie and the first conversation I had with him after we had had him for two days:
Me: Mate, please tell me which sect you're part of.
Him: I don't know what you're talking about.
Me: Please don't be embarrassed, I'm just curious.
Him: We're not a sect, we're [never mind]
Me: Ah, [never mind]'s people?
Him: Well yes, but we're not a sect. You don't seem to like us too much, do you?
Me: [Talking for about 15 minutes or so].
Him: We have been warned about people like you but I never thought I'd meet one in actual life. Your world is the world of Conan the Barbarian, do you realise that?
Me: Dude, let me buy you a drink or whatever, if you're not drinking.
Regrettably, he was moved to another place soon afterwards.

I think Tuomas has built Nightwish to be less of a metal band, and more an orchestra that includes an electric guitar, bass, and drums (and keys and [insert Troy’s instruments here]).
Huh, I didn't think of that. Maybe I'll enjoy them differently using that interpretation.

Amorphis and In Flames battle to a draw.
Amorphis, however, wins a handy battle against Wardruna, banishing them from the GMAC. It's Discharge next.
It's a tie between Nightwish and Opeth. We'll resolve this after the rest of the League.
Savatage smashes KISS right in the KISSer. KISS comes back in League 5.

Oranssi Pazuzu is the most interesting metal band of the last decade. A new album (Mestarin Kynsi) has come out since we put nominations in for this game and it's even better than Varahtelija. Actually, all of their albums are pretty impressive. Clearly this is one of my nominations. For those of you that don't like harsh/growled/unclean vocals, I get you. In fact this album in particular was the first time I actually understood the appeal and actually liked the atmosphere that such vocal intonations added to the overall experience of the song. (I have since developed a great appreciation and affinity for black and more extreme genres of metal, all thanks to this album). But to me, Oranssi Pazuzu has a completely unique sound, one step removed from other genres.

And what is that sound? Well Finnish Black Metal for starters, but with a heavy does of psychedelia (think mid/late 60s Pink Floyd) thrown in. At times the repetition of the longer songs on the album invoke Krautrock (think Neu! or CAN). Putting it altogether, this is a groundbreaking album, by a groundbreaking band. Get yourself in the right frame of mind and be ready for a hell of a ride. Oranssi Pazuzu is like screaming down a rollercoaster in the dark while listening to Careful With That Axe, Eugene. It's the ride that the narrator of Satellite XV experiences after the song is over. Hyperbole is not possible with the band.

I know Gojira is a much more well-known band, but resist the urge to immediately vote for them just because you can't pronounce Varahtelija or have general distaste for the extreme vocals. At least until you've given it a fair listen. I think you'll be happy you spent 15 or 20 minutes doing so.

I think Tuomas has built Nightwish to be less of a metal band, and more an orchestra that includes an electric guitar, bass, and drums (and keys and [insert Troy’s instruments here]). Of course this would still not work if the quality of the material wasn’t good, but imo it really is, the performances are always powerful and the songs are more meaningful to me than most other metal bands.
This is pretentious enough that I can believe Tuomas sees it that way. The orchestra fills up the sonic space but the main rock instruments still dominate. I still think Septicflesh has the best integration of metal and orchestra that I’ve heard.

I like Oranssi Pazuzu a lot, but not as much as Gojira. Lots of no brainers here.

I intend to give it a good listen - I've heard lots of good things. Regardless, thanks for the passion regarding your nomination!

Oranssi Pazuzu - Saw the name before but never heard these, sounds inoffensive so far but nothing really happening, vocal has come in now not great, a riff has come in now as well, not great either

Gojira - opinion given before

Oranssi Pazuzu with the win, don't like either, OP sounds more like a band playing

Joe Satriani - Obviously a classic track, also familiar with the track that was in American Dad, I'm not likely to ever listen to this type of music for enjoyment but Joe is pretty good

Metallica - opinion given before

Metallica with the win

Thin Lizzy - I feel the choice of track is going to harm them here, Emerald would be much more in Maidenfans ball park, but another classic Lizzy album with a lot of their biggest hits, the Boys are Back in Town obviously, but also the title track, Warriors and Cowboy Song are classics, although similar to Kiss in the last round, the versions on "Live and Dangerous" are far superior. Underrated tracks include Fight or Fall, Angel from the Coast and Running Back. Romeo and the Lonely Girl is a bit rubbish though.

Blind Guardian - opinion given before

Thin Lizzy with the win

Lamb of God - saw these live a few times in support slots, not my cup of tea but they are good at what they do, spoken word intro is a bad start, riff ain't terrible, but the vocal is.

Faith No More - opinion given before

Faith No More with the win

Hey, now this is a challenge.

I admit that Oranssi Pazuzu is really interesting and intriguing, but I've been a Gojira fan for quite some time. But I admit it's close.

As for the second one - wow, it's possibly the hardest pick so far. But Surfer is more consistent than Death Magnetic, I guess. I know I'm predictable and shallow, but Always with Me, Always with You is really something special and it has no counterpart on the 'Tullica album. And Crushing Day is one of my favourite Satriani tracks ever, whereas Magnetic ain't got a single top Metallica track for me.

The third one. Weeeeell.... you know what I said about the hardest pick? It was just because that one came earlier. I really don't know here, I love both bands, I love both albums. But in the end I guess that Jailbreak is more of an accomplishment for Thin Lizzy than Tales is for BG. Yeah, I think I like the former more.

As for the fourth pair... While I like Faith No More, I've never been a fand of The Real Thing. My Faith No More begins with Angel Dust. But in the end I guess I like it more than LoG, so there goes.
