GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

I'm far from being a genre's fan but fact is there's Power Metal that's far from Broadway Metal like Helloween, Running Wild, Blind Guardian, Crimson Glory, Virgin Steel and some others.
Symphony X are quickly becoming one of my favourite power metal bands.

True. But if that's the people's will... fair enough.

Yeah, it depends how broad you think the “power metal” label is. I think of bands like Blind Guardian and Iced Earth as “power metal,” and I like them very much. Nightwish sounds different, sort of a faux-symphonic version of metal you might see at a Vegas or Broadway show (even when they are not covering an ACTUAL Broadway showtune). Symphony X also has that “symphonic” sound, obviously, but they are heavier and more metal-sounding. Nightwish does have a few tracks I like, such as Amaranth and the live version of Ghost Love Score, but generally I cannot get into them. I agree that beating Opeth is a bit of an upset, but Nightwish is very popular here, for some reason, and folks also seem to love Empire of the Clouds, which is one of my least favorite Maiden tracks since the reunion. Let’s just say, I have a strong, even physical, negative reaction to anything that is, or sounds like, a Broadway showtune. It’s like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. If disliking that stuff is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.

I can sympathize - I generally have a similar reaction to saccharine romantic songs and 'round-voiced' English singers.

This, interestingly, is the sort of attitude I have towards Savatage. To me, they are a Broadway band more than anything to do with metal, especially on Gutter Ballet. Whenever I listen to it I wonder if it's possible to get diabetes from music, because this is so soppy and sweet. I did vote for it this round, but really only because they were up against another circus act with really mediocre music. But I think Savatage are extremely overrated.

I think Tuomas has built Nightwish to be less of a metal band, and more an orchestra that includes an electric guitar, bass, and drums (and keys and [insert Troy’s instruments here]). Of course this would still not work if the quality of the material wasn’t good, but imo it really is, the performances are always powerful and the songs are more meaningful to me than most other metal bands.

Well said.

@Magnus : aren't you voting anymore? Is it a boycott due to people's dislike of extreme metal? If so abstaining makes things even more difficult. #VoteForTrveMetal #ExtremeMetalMatters #MakeMetalUndergroundAgain :D :D :D
I don't really like the direction Amorphis took after Tales (although Am Universum has some great stuff), and I've never really liked In Flames.
Wardruna is close enough to my interests and Weltanschauung, but Tales is an album I love from the first time I heard it last millennium.
I hate Nightwish with a vengeance, and I don't like Opeth at all.
Not a KISS fan while appreciating their early albums, and this is not the best from Savatage.
Should I flip a coin four times?

Yeah forgot about most recent Iced Earth. Although I'm not quite a fan they're surely not Broadway.

Yup... it has too much to say the truth. That's why I really dislike it.

It depends how it's built. Let's go to Iced Earth: IMO the favorite thing these guys ever did is one of their most "Broadway like" compositions (Gettysburg). And Empire Of The Clouds while being far from my favorite tracks features some cool passages. Devin Townsend also happens to be one of my favorite composers and it's well known his praise of lloyd Webber... but the twist Dev puts on his songs whenever he goes down that path are something really outside the square.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLL... you got yourself the "sentence of the week award" with that one.

That kind of reminds me of a certain...practitioner of magic.

Well... at least here you know what to do :) .

P.S. : I understand not liking a great portion of In Flames' catalogue (TBF I really hate everything they did from more than a decade now). But Jester Race and Whoracle are really influential albums.
