GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

I'm well aware that the genre which Infest represents isn't all that popular here, but I'd be shocked if it got beaten to a pulp, let's say 25-3. Of course there's a chance that it'll be facing a real powerhouse of an album, but it's not like I'm expecting it to go far anyways.

I live in Bizarro World, don't you remember?
Oh, I could never forget.

I wish I'd gone ahead and sent a nomination list now. I had 12 albums I genuinely felt deserved a shot at the title, but then thought everything else I was picking after that was too niche to become a champion of the metal genre. There are definintely niche albums in this game.

Yes, you should have. Oh well!

Maybe after this is all done we'll look at the albums knocked out in one and see who was crushed.
I was going to say that it might be fun to do a very brief “worst of the worst” tourney after the main event was over, but after listening to the Naked City album that’s coming up in tonight’s match-ups, I think the “winner” of that tourney may already be decided...

I dunno, the hit rate for me is pretty low on the niche albums. Old dog, new tricks, I guess. Surprised to see Persefone advancing past Kvelertak and Riot, both of which I far preferred, and both of which I thought would do better with fans of classic Maiden. I suppose if you really like the proggy direction Maiden has taken recently (I generally don’t, with some noteworthy exceptions), it makes sense. As I get older and grumpier, I have less patience for overlong songs that try (and more often than not fail) to be “epic.”*

But don’t misunderstand: this is a terrific game by @LooseCannon that keeps me coming back to the forum even though I’m busy.

*PS: I looked it up. The word “epic” can just mean long and bombastic, so under that definition, I admit that any long proggy song fits. But I think of “epic” as also meaning heroic or majestic, and a lot of prog falls far short of that standard. I guess what I’m saying is, expect my votes largely to go against long songs that don’t rise to that level.

Bewitched is like a who's who of all your favorite NWOBHM bands mixed into one meh package. You got the heavy metal riffs, the twin guitar leads, the catchy hooks. There are several licks that I feel are directly lifted from Maiden and Saxon. I don't really understand the need for music like this. It isn't as good as the original and doesn't add anything new to the table. It lacks the energy and spirit of original NWOBHM. Also the vocals are ridiculous. Meeeeeeeeeh.

You should save this write-up for when Hell Fire joins the game.

There's definitely an element of "if everything is an epic, nothing is epic" to some proggy music, but I think it's possible to differentiate between songs that have a majestic sort of feel and songs that are just long. I don't think Deafheaven, for example, is necessarily going for epic in the bombastic sense of the word.

Persefone are what I expected Opeth to be when people wrote they're "progressive/death metal", but 70% more spiritualist.

Bewitched were lame compared to Deafheaven, specifically the combination of the music with muhehehe evil lyrics.

Ophelia didn't carry me anywhere despite the dreamy sound. Bodom gets stuck in my head.

Darkthrone were a little mesmerizing, I dug the lo-fi production and music. Ozzy's was great as well though. Darkthrone lose solely because I'm not a fan of satanic lyrics (unless it's Maiden of course!)

Persefone are great wankers, and the only reason I didn't listen all the way through is because I'm getting tired. I can't decide between that and Riot, so here's a reliable voting mechanism:

Riot.
