GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

Bewitched vs Deafheaven -- I enjoyed both albums, but I'm going for Bewitched.
Ophelia vs Children of Bodom -- Ophelia is unremarkable, CoB were past their prime here but the album is still good enough.
Darkthrone vs Ozzy -- FINALLY an album actually worthy of being on a best-of list. Transilvanian Hunger is better, but Funeral Moon is an undisputed classic.
Riot vs Persefone -- Riot are fun. Not... great, but fun.

Getting Bruce kicked off a tv show because he was "too heavy metal" to be allowed in their company was another thing that raised the hatred stakes.
Do you have a video or article for this? I’d like to hear more.

I'm not certain I remember where I heard it from, but I think it was Bruce said it in an interview with either Kerrang or Metal Hammer possibly when Chemical Wedding was being released. I remember it was an american tv show that Bruce was due to be on promoting Accident of Birth and that he said something along the lines of that he could have really done with that exposure at the time.

I might be wrong on the detail though, e.g. it could have been skunkworks he'd been promoting and he might have told the tale when AOB was being released.

Bewitched and Deafhaven both make music I dislike because it sounds like it has been recorded by amateurs, but I'm going with Bewitched because at least I could make it through a few songs on this one.

I made it through all of the songs I could find by Ophelia and they were really nice. Too sleepy for me to truly get into, but preferable to Bodom.

I don't want to vote for Ozzy, but no one should ever pay for the kind of bullshit Darkthrone "released". Buzzsaw amateur garbage. Ozzy it is.

Riot is harmlessly mediocre at best, the kind of band destined to be the first opener on every bill. Persefone is a cool find. The album gets a little too calculated for me, but it's still interesting (despite the weird autotuning).

I really don't think Deafheaven deserve to go much further in a greatest metal album game, there's nothing outstanding about them. Bewitched aren't filled with greatness either, but I prefer them to Deafheaven.

Similarly, Ophelia are a little bit too niche for my liking to be worthy of this title, while Children of Bodom have a solid metal album there.

Much as I'm loath to give too much support to a conservative Ozzy album, I don't think Darkthrone's production can really justify a high ranking here.

Getting steadily fonder of Persefone. That's a really nice album with some lovely music, which outclasses Riot in my book.

I'm looking forward to hearing an enjoyable black metal album. :)
I think pretty much every "great" black metal album is in the game. Remember, we're in League 17 right now, the equivalent of, well, the Lancashire Amateur League - Division 4, which has such titans of football as "Tottington United Reserves", "Rochdale St. Clements A Team", "Wigan Town Football Club Saturday". So that's the kind of albums we should expect right now.

What, no Accrington Stanley or Guiseley AFC?

I shouldn't joke, Sunderland are still down that way.

Match 1:
I can’t really determine if Bewitched are aiming for a satanic, serious or silly feel, but they’re entertaining enough. And they certainly get bonus points with me for their cover of Thor’s "Let the Blood Run Red" – I can’t express how much of a smile it put on my face when I heard Jon Mikl Thor himself singing on it! (For the record, I used to own an old VHS-tape of a Thor live release I would watch the hell out of when I was young).

I have absolutely no desire to listen to Deafheaven ever again.

Bewitched is of course the winner here.

Match 2:
I did not expect Ophelia to sound like that. Very atmospheric and moody, the kind of music I would like to fully immerse myself in when time permits it.

It’s such a shame it’s up against Children of Bodom. As promising as Ophelia sounds, and despite that "Hate Crew Deathroll" isn't Bodom's best, I almost already knew what I was going to vote.

So of course, Bodom wins.

Match 3:
I think I mentioned in a previous post that black metal was still kinda new to me, so I approached Darkthrone with curiosity. I have absolutely no idea what a “true black metal” album should sound like, but I gotta admit I didn’t exactly find this record better than, say, Gorgoroth’s Antichrist. So far, I think the black metal album I’ve enjoyed the most is Satyricon’s debut.

I’ve made my feelings about Ozzy clear in a previous post as well, and I actually think he’ll come out on top this time.

Yeah, I’m gonna vote for Ozzy.

Match 4:
Riot is another one of those generic, run-of-the-mill heavy metal bands. The album is fun to listen to while it’s spinning, yet pretty much forgettable once it’s over.

Persefone’s music is still much more interesting.

Persefone get’s my vote.
