European Politics

6:30 am???? They're making you watch the news at sunrise, while the Americas are just starting to sleep?

I hope an independent Scotland gets it together. :p

Honestly, if they do go independent, I give it 15 years before they hold another referendum to rejoin the UK and get a near-unanimous Yes.

Yeah, it'll be tough all right...

Just imagine the humiliation of rejoining. No devolved parliament (yay), no Scottish bank notes, no control over the NHS, etc. etc. So glad I'm leaving on Saturday.

Honestly, if they do go independent, I give it 15 years before they hold another referendum to rejoin the UK and get a near-unanimous Yes.

Only thing is that if that were to happen, what's to say the UK would agree to let them? Or would the UK even continue to exist in such a capacity, or would Wales have decided to separate too.... maybe that way we'd finally become England instead of Britain, and get things like our own national anthem.

Also, Scotland can take the royal family if they like, I'm not really attached ;D

Hmm, Scotland has lots of oil you say? and might possibly be suddenly removed from every international pact/group? Where did I put that stock "Sounds like someone needs some freedom" meme...
How seriously do you think this will happen?

They will still have oil, because North Sea oil is the most expensive oil to access in the world, and major industry and business is going to flee Scotland in droves.
Six banks said they would a few days ago and at least one company has bought property in England as it plans to move if Yes.

A new country whose economy is based entirely on processing oil. Great idea.

If there's debate over Scotland sustaining themselves, then Wales doesn't deserve to be given the light of day for independence. And this is coming from a libertarian Welshman.

Hmm, perhaps we should set Wales free forcibly, they're clearly a drain on the rest of the UK!!!11!

I'd support the idea of the United Kingdom adopting a federal system like Germany or the US, but even that has some drawbacks. As for the royal family, move them to a council estate in Liverpool for all I care.

I think the place powers need to devolve is England. If Parliament was not concerned with England as well as the UK. That's not very fair.

I'm not sure ease of access to the oil matters to a future reunification. If it's there at all, the UK would rather control than not, even if they can't get at it easily.

If Scotland is a broke morass because of no money to develop such things (much like they were in 1707), why would the UK want them back?

The fact that we are debating a reunification before the question of independence has even be determined has so many delicious levels of hilarity inherent to it.
