Dream Theater

Oh I'm sure I've used it myself before, but the more I see it the more it seems a bit meaningless. It feels like almost anything with Dream Theater that's an instrumental section or has a solo gets filed under "wankery".
Aye, I know what you mean...
This is my biggest problem with it. Its this very emotional ballad thing, and then it almost randomly changes into a wanking chug fest that has nothing to do with the rest of the song.
Dream Theater gets criticized for a lot of stuff, and most of the time I'll confidently argue against them, but with SC, almost every criticism of DT that you could think of is true. It's filled with songs that are long for no good reason, there are moments where I feel like technicality and wanking (a term I normally dislike) take priority over the actual songwriting.
Train Of Thought is an album I disregarded for a long time, too much wanking.
My favorite Dream Theater album has joined the game. Also my favorite album on the whole list. It's more metal head friendly, being more riff driven and isn't very complicated. They get all the wanking out in one song.
Everything on the album is there for a reason, there's no needless "wanking" that DT has been guilty of quite a few times after. It's nothing short of genius.
Nowadays, DT fills up a song with tons of instrumental wankery and every song ends up being 8 or more minutes. On Awake, the long songs are more than just wanking, they have different sections and take the listener on a journey.
:ninja:

Don't see anything contradictory in Mosh's statements. He admitted to using the word and argued people seem to consider all DT instrumentals sections wanking. Making the word more frequently used than it should be in reference to all DT releases. Looking at his posts, there's a clear difference in what he considers wanking and what he doesn't. DT from beginning to Six Degrees and then DT afterwards.

That (2002) is exactly when I set the limit between DT being an interesting band and contenting themselves of "developing the brand" at the expense of the music - apart from the song "Octavarium" itself, there is nothing as good as what they did pre-2002.

That is also when they should have fired JLB (they came close, according to the biography) but getting Rudess in was also a mistake, as far as I am concerned, they should have kept Liquid Tension Experiment rolling as a vehicle for "musical wankery".

Nor to mention most of those posts are 2 or 3 years old. Sometimes opinions change.

I'll say.

Dude, I noticed that you're bringing pop stuff to the forum way too much. (even if you hate them) You better not talk about them, just an advice though.

This is a post from 2011, in response to someone posting the Children of Bodom cover of Oops I Did It Again. :D

All this talk of wankery...
Pictures of JP's 2016 signature model have leaked!

Dream Theater announced a second date at the London Palladium, but it's on the same day that Symphony X are playing in London. This is a little unfair. I've already bought a ticket for the Symphony X gig and I'm happy to go to that instead as I've seen Dream Theater six times already but Dream Theater are likely to draw people away from Symphony X.

Hopefully the SX fans have already bought their tickets and DT won't affect them, but it'll certainly hurt the "let's go to this show tonight" crowd. Lame on DT's part, though I'm sure they have zero control over it.

Both bands should just team up and play an arena. :)

"The Astonishing: Act I":

01. Descent of the NOMACS
02. Dystopian Overture
03. The Gift of Music
04. The Answer
05. A Better Life
06. Lord Nafaryus
07. A Savior in the Square
08. When Your Time Has Come
09. Act of Faythe
10. Three Days
11. The Hovering Sojourn
12. Brother, Can You Hear Me?
13. A Life Left Behind
14. Ravenskill
15. Chosen
16. A Tempting Offer
17. Digital Discord

Interlude overkill as expected, and that's just part 1 :(

I hope some of those tracks are actually parts of a single track. By this rate we're gonna have a 30-35 track album, that's ridiculous.

It could be two long tracks, Act I and Act II, with the tracks flowing into each other.

Didn't Dream Theater go on record as saying they wanted to play the whole album live too? That'd make sense too if it's two acts with a break in the middle..

The rumor at DTF is that the Nomac symbols next to the song titles on the website indicate the start of a suite. So the small song bits make up about 3 complete pieces. I hope this is the case.

Symphony X actually supported them in the UK in 2007. That was eight years ago though and I haven't seen Symphony X since, which is why I'm going to see them twice next year.
