Dream Theater

I suspect the entire DT tour will be more expensive than usual.

We now have some unofficial confirmation that The Astonishing is a rock opera. http://www.triffidanddanger.se/dream-theater-ger-intim-konsert-i-stockholm/ - translate that page to English.

Rumors are that the show will be out of the ordinary. The big rumor is major scenery changes on the scale of The Wall tour, where Floyd built and tore down a wall onstage through the show. I suspect that DT is going for the full opera treatment: this tour will be for seated audiences in opera halls or other such theaters, and nothing but the new album will be played. Tickets will be priced accordingly (read: $$$$$$).

I suspect you're right. It should be cool to see, if tickets aren't ludicrously expensive. And it probably guarantees that the next album will be a "back to basics", more metal-oriented record.

This album could still be very metal.

The nice thing is: for the first time since about Octavarium, it feels like DT is swinging for the fences again. Ya don't build this kind of hype unless you're sure you've got the music to back it up.

Not expecting much since the last album sucked, but still hoping this one won't be full of interludes and songs segueing into each other without any sense (*cough* Scenes From A Memory *cough*).

Scenes is very light on interludes and all the segues are very smooth. It'll be very hard to top it.

DT making an album better than Scenes would be like Maiden topping Seventh Son or Powerslave or NOTB :D

Let's just say that if they make a better album than Scenes it would be incredible. I'm hoping for a more metal album like Train of Thought with less soap opera ballads (that they've written far too many of lately)

Six Degrees is way better than Scenes imo. Of DT's "big 4", I'd say Scenes is easily the weakest. But still an awesome album.

DT12 was awesome. Best since ToT. But I think they still have it in them to make at least one more classic.

I found Scenes to be very dull for some reason. I put it in the same category as I&W and ADToE Dream Theater. I much prefer ToT, 6 Degrees and 8VM Dream Theater. And Awake, their best album.

I don't like the title. Sounds lame, if I must say. I don't think Portnoy would allow such a title. At least not nowadays I can't see him going for a title like that.

I hope it's not a rock opera like many keep saying. If it has to be an opera, I'd much rather a Metal opera. I don't want that proggy rock vibe of I&W, or another overproduced version of I&W like Scenes or ADToE. I want another Awake!!

I must say, I'm pretty excited. Yes, the concept is threatening to become unbearably cheesy, but it's also something really grand, definitely their grandest since Octavarium, at least. They are really trying, IMHO. Count me intriqued. Unlike most at the DTF, I don't consider the title all that great, but it could have been worse :)

I agree. It's cheesy but the guys are working hard on this, hopefully the songs will not only be grand but also live up to the standard of past epics.
