Dream Theater

I feel that Dream Theater doesn't really try anything new anymore. It's seems like they have done everything thing they tried to do and there's nowhere else for them to go. I used to always anticipate what their new releases would have in store for us; they were always trying something new. But these days their music is just stale and predictable.

I thought their latest album was their best in a long time (certainly since Train of Thought), but I agree with you somewhat. Since the underwhelming Octavarium, they haven't really done anything new. But honestly, the departure of Portnoy has done nothing but good things for them if you ask me. Gone are the "tuf guy" vocals and angry rants and hour-long suites about alcoholism. Now if they can just find a keyboard player whose solos don't sound like a monkey masturbating in space, they'll be on an even better track.

I see that and raise you Endless Sacrifice at 6:28.

Ugh, that song is one of the worst offenders! From 5:30 to 8:06 makes no sense given the song's subject matter and if omitted would have been a much stronger song. Aside from Vacant I actually think it's the weakest song on the album because of it.

Though it may be a guitar/keyboard unison part, I think that In the Name of God at 8:35 really brings out an imagery of a monkey pulling it in space.

Good point! Especially the buildup and climax (see what I did there) around 9:01. I guess I never really noticed the guitars and keys in this section because I was too busy hooked on that bass line.

I've grown to enjoy the Endless Sacrifice instrumental. It's definitely unnecessary and self indulgent, but the guitar solos are pretty good. I do agree the song would've been much stronger without though.
