Nah, he wrote his lyrics in poem form and let MP and JP fit it to the songs. At some point they got sick of doing that.

Moore - Tony Kaye
Sherinian - Rick Wakeman
Rudess - Keith Emerson
I'd actually switch Sherinian and Rudess. I get where you're coming from with comparing Rudess to Keith Emerson, but I think it's much more appropriate the other way around. Emerson was like the Hendrix of keyboards, he wanted to be this huge flashy rockstar on the instrument. That is totally Derek Sherinian. Wakeman on the other hand was very much classically minded and the keyboard acted like a mini orchestra with him playing.

I think all three of them are more like Emerson when they solo (or at least when Moore was in DT).

In terms of personality etc., mayhaps. But when I listen to Karn Evil 9, I hear definitely more of Jordan than Derek. Subjectively. That's where that comparison came from.

Interesting thing I found in the lyric booklet of 6DOIT: it's the first album to specify that the music of every track is written by "Myung, Petrucci, Portnoy, Rudess" instead of simply "Dream Theater."

Apparently Myung didn't get the same memo re: lyrics

Myung is listed first because he's the coolest and the most animated and the most exciting to watch. He doesn't have to contribute to every album lyrically when he tackles LaBrie on stage at his leisure, full bass and all.

BTW - since there's been a lot of praise regarding Derek - have you all heard his solo discography and especially Planet X (the band)? It's amazing! :)

Planet X is cool but not really the sort of thing I go out of my way for. Same with LTE.

LOL. I give up.

"Well, I couldn't leave
Unless the old man chased me out
'Cause I'd already promised
That I'd milk his cows
I had to say something
To strike him very weird
So I yelled
"I like Jordan Rudess and his beard"
Rita looked offended
But she got out of the way
As he came charging down the stairs
Sayin', "What's that I heard you say?"

I said, "I like Jordan Rudess
I think you heard me right"
And I ducked as he swung
At me with all his might
Rita mumbled something
'Bout her mother on the hill
As his fist had hit the icebox
He said he's going to kill
Me if I don't get out the door
In two seconds flat
"You elitist blasphemer
Rotten lawyer wankery rat""

Did I just read lead drums? Come again? Lead drums? That's ridiculous.

I can only imagine this has to do with an ego problem. "But you have lead guitars, and you have lead vocals.. boohoo, I want lead too."
Surely, it doesn't refer to the position but to the chemical element... The term was invented by Herman Rarebell after recording "The Zoo".

Nope, the only two credited with "lead" are LaBrie and Portnoy. Petrucci's says Guitars, Rudess's says Keyboards, and Myung's says Bass. Thus my speculation about it being a squabble between those two.

This (and to a lesser extant SFAM) was the album where Portnoy's role as a vocalist increased dramatically. I can very easily imagine LaBrie wanting to distinguish his role as lead singer, especially since the first vocals on the album belong to Portnoy (even though you'd have to be a pretty stupid Dream Theater fan to not know who the lead singer is). Portnoy probably saw this and then said, "Fuck him, I'll be Lead Drums. Wah wah wah."

Or it was a shout-out (I don't recall whether this album was in the Inspirational Corner or not, but just as well might be)

This kind of altar with CDs they should be listening to during the recording of the album.

Will Dream Theater ever write an album without an "inspiration corner?" faq id: 14
MP: There's always been an "inspiration corner" - it's just that we usually don't share it with people. From day one, there's always been CDs that we've carried with us for inspiration. But it was only with Scenes and Six Degrees where we made it public. It wasn't even supposed to be a big deal, but it ended up being this big center of discussion between the fans. Instead it really just was supposed to have been a passing tidbit of information, it wasn't supposed to be this big thing that people were going to use to try to anticipate the direction of the album.

Don't know if they kept it after MP left.
