I think Rudess just doesn't want to be overshadowed technically. Petrucci does amazing things technically so Rudess wants to match him. Because he's just as capable technically. Would much rather prefer if he was coming up with stuff that creates a great atmosphere or basic (not that basic of course) cool melodies. I love what he does on Blind Faith, for example, something of that effect.

That really short piece of music at the very end of the most recent album is beautiful. Rudess should do more stuff like that.

At the very least, it'd be nice if he used a normal piano setting more often. One of my favorite things about Sherinian was how often is keyboards actually sounded like a piano. With JR it seems like he only uses that for ballads, until DT12 that is.

There are a lot of moments when Rudess goes OTT with the keyboard stuff, particularly in 'The Dark Eternal Night'. That part is a bit ridiculous.

Black Clouds because I'm not much of a fan of the first 3 songs.
But still, I'm surprised Falling Into Infinity isn't going next.

FII is a much better album than Octavarium, it's kind of lame to see them tied. Sure 8vm has the title track, but FII is far more consistent.

'Octavarium' has some of my favourite Dream Theater songs and while 'Falling Into Infinity' isn't a particularly bad album it's nowhere near as good as 'Octavarium'.
