Funnily enough, I kinda like The Dark Eternal Night, it has some good riffs. Ministry of Lost Souls, however, would be a contender for my least favorite DT song. I even prefer Prophets of War.

The Dark Eternal Night does have some good riffs but the middle is just so bad, the rest is really good though.
The Ministry of Lost souls is so awesome, there's so much emotion within the first few minutes. The chugging doesn't really go with the part that was played earlier, but it just somehow works. The guitar and keyboard solo at 10:10 just sticks in my mind for hours after hearing the song.

Systematic Chaos has some decent music, and is definitely more listenable as a whole than Octavarium or 6DOIT. However, it's also hackneyed, wankerific, and creatively bankrupt. Octavarium and 6DOIT have peaks and valleys, from amazing to just plain bad, whereas Systematic Chaos is an endless barrage of sub-mediocrity.

I think I'm going to write a little review summing up my thoughts on Systematic Chaos later.

I still can't believe Falling Into Infinity has 2 votes. It's easily the second worst DT album.

The Ministry of Lost souls is so awesome, there's so much emotion within the first few minutes. .
This is my biggest problem with it. Its this very emotional ballad thing, and then it almost randomly changes into a wanking chug fest that has nothing to do with the rest of the song.

Prophets of War isn't as terrible as some say, but not really good either. Kinda feels like an Octavarium leftover, with all the Muse influences, but not as well written. Not bad, but ot really what I want to hear from DT.

Easiest choice ever. While far from a great album, Black Clouds has three songs that completely wipe the floor with anything from SC.

The third, Nightmare To Remember, is a bit iffy for me. It has that horrible instrumental section but at the same time it has Beautiful Agony, which is one of my favorite DT moments ever.

For reference, the other two are The Best of Times and The Count of Tuscany.

The other ones I agree with but I'll take The Dark Eternal Night (only song I like on SC) over A Nightmare to Remember. Actually, A Rite of Passage would be my third favorite on BC&SL if was like how it was on the music video. It excludes stupid Rudess stuff.

Never saw the video, but those keyboard solos are really terrible so maybe I should check that out. Not sure if that would save the song for me though, it's one of my least favorites.

Can't say I'd take TDEN over Nightmare.

Nightmare is completely ruined for me by that Portnoy barking part; the song is really good up until then but after that I simply can't take it seriously. To me, Rudess's solos add to the song about 1% of the time (the intro to Endless Sacrifice is all that stands out as tasteful right now); it's as if they're thinking "Well, Petrucci had his turn to solo, now it's Jordan's" without actually considering whether or not it will drag the song down or not. Hint: it always does.

Aside from his solo, though, I think Rite is a solid song. Nothing's bad on Black Clouds, per say... it's just that Systematic is far stronger to me. I really like Wither if I'm in the right mood, though. That's some powerful stuff.

Both albums are pretty naff, but 'Black Clouds & Silver Linings' has 'A Nightmare to Remember' and 'A Rite of Passage' which are better than the best songs from 'Systematic Chaos' ('In the Presence of Enemies'). The rest of both albums is pretty mediocre by Dream Theater's standards.

I generally agree with Beauregard on Rudess' solos, it's especially bad on Black Clouds though and SC. Even on the tour for SC it was like he stopped giving a fuck about playing tastefully in favor of fitting in as many notes as possible. The keytar thing he acquired around that time didn't help much. See the solo for Take the Time on that tour.

I really love his playing on the latest album though. The few solos he has are really fantastic (minus AFTR) and his playing everywhere else really feels like it actually adds to the song. Something that has felt rare for him lately.
