Does the rebooted 'classic' tours...

I think it's getting a bit out of hand. Nowadays he plays
Wasted Years
slower than the studio version. I don't see that as an improvement.
It's worse.
I agree that it's getting out of hand, but Nicko is not entirely to blame. From the history part 3 feature, we can glean that H was very unhappy with the breakneck speeds the band were playing (something along the lines of "choking the life out of the songs" and Bruce struggling to keep up). Watching recent videos of Nicko's drum clinics from 2012, he is still very much capable of playing the songs at faster tempos. At the end of History part 3, Nicko mentions that he spoke to Adrian about the tension between them regarding live tempos. Taking all this into consideration, it's likely that Adrian and Bruce (and quite possibly Steve) were the driving force behind these ridiculous tempo restrictions.

All 3 guitarists are different, IMO i dont think you can compare them and say one is better than the other. Adrian's way of playing and writing is totally different to Janick/Daves, some people like it some people dont. Same goes for Janicks stuff, i personally cannot stand his solos half the time, but the acoustic sections he writes are epic. To compare them itd be like comparing Mustaine to Hammett, they are both extremely different. If you base it off guitar skills then thats highly debatable as you never know how talented someone is until they play on their own so they have no limitations, imo Alex Lifeson is better than all 3 of Maidens guitarists. But having 3 different type guitarists in one band is why Maiden are special, they have different sounds blending into one unique sound.

To answer the main thread question, no it doesnt take away how special the original tour was. If you were there in 88 or 85 then that show would of been just as special as seeing them in 08/09 or 12/13, as there performance is different even though they play a similar set.

What is all this piddle about Davey "simplifying" his solos? If you watch footage from Donington (this year), Davey is absolutely on fire (several people mentioned it) --his lead playing is a as good as it's ever been. People are confusing not playing it like the original with simplifying. As for an earlier comment (I think by Forostar) in regard to
the tempo of Wasted Years --the only person who ever slows this down is Adrian. And for good reason: when they get to the middle & Adrian returns to the opening (descending) guitar riff, he's coming in too fast. You can hear this on literally every live recording of this track Maiden have ever released. It sounds like Adrian is coming in too slow, but he's not; he's just trying to keep the tempo in check. Not sure if all the live tempo stuff was worth leaving the band over though.

I don't think they are better now than before except for maybe sound. The stage sets are crap compared to back then and there was more of an "atmosphere" to their shows playing indoor arenas as opposed to the crap outdoors venues.... I am waiting (if it ever happens) for a reboot of Somewhere on Tour though. Best tour of the 80s and best setlist too!

I beg to differ. Only two songs off "Powerslave" and none off "Piece of mind" ('Flight of Icarus' was played at the first gigs of the tours but soon was dropped and replaced with 'Phantom of the opera'; 'Where eagles dare' was then played at some gigs of the UK leg of the tour but was dropped and not replaced with any other song) hardly make it the best setlist of the 80s.

I know, but then they dropped 'The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner' (if I remember correctly then 'Sea of madness' took its place in the set) and 'Flight of Icarus' was replaced by 'Phantom of the opera' after a few gigs.

If you did see them at Belgrade, congratulations! You were one of the few who saw that setlist.

Sea of Madness was there from the beginning until it was dropped after the first few shows in North America (1987).
And it's still possible that there was no set change in the 2nd gig (Zagreb). There's no known bootleg or setlist (source) from that gig.

God that would have been a fantastic show to see! :D So many underplayed gems!

Yeah, I know 'Sea of madness' was played at all shows before the North American tour; what I meant is that its place in the setlist changed once they dropped 'The loneliness of the long distance runner', which could well have happened after the first show or, as you say, after the second. :)

actually, there is. The Loneliness was replaced with "Where Eagles Dare" there.
