Can heavy metal singers actually sing?

The F#5 he hits in Where Eagles Dare (Hammersmith Odeon 1983). At least I think it's F#5. I'll retest.

Yup, you're right. The highest full voice note he hits in studio is also on Where Eagles Dare - E5.

A lot of interesting discussion going on here. I'll just drop by with a brief side note: The Masterplan song Onhell posted, and some more, make me proud to even come from the same country as Jørn Lande. What a great singer.

Heavy metal singers CAN sing. What is that supposed to mean anyway? Can they actually sing??... Of course!

This chick is lame. Just another one of these opera singers using 500 year old techniques and think they know every fucking thing. etc. can.

Opera singing and Rock and Roll singing are two very different things. I will take 500 year old techniques over "modern" any day. Just because someone can hold a note and carry a tune in no way makes them a "good" singer. The classic arts (Opera, Ballet, Theater, etc) are classic and set the bar for a reason. Any actor who does theater, then movies IMO is better than just a screen actor. Same with a classically train guitarist, singer, etc.

What this blog was meant to illustrate was dispelling the myth that Heavy Metal singers just yell. She gave most of them (Bruce, Dio, Halford) really good reviews so your complaints, to me, are ridiculous.

If you want to hear a real professional's analysis on these guys....I think you should hear what a MODERN vocal coach will say. Here's a list of them in case you're interested:

You'd think that there's a reason they use 500 year old techniques... Instruments might have changed in 500 years, but the human body hasn't.  What held true then still holds true now.

Those old techniques won't teach you to sing rock and metal. :)
I was also just speaking from personal experience, I didn't have a great time learning from opera teachers because everything I wanted to do, they were insisting it was impossible. It was pissing me off.
