Can heavy metal singers actually sing?

<thousand_suns>I do not believe anyone can sing like Bruce in Flight of Icarus when Bruce sings the high "flyyyyyyy". Maybe not even myself can imitate this. I know now there are no other singer that can do like Bruce.

Did you guys knowing that Bruce Dickinson also is enjoying fencing? His skill can be demonstrated at the rock in rio dvd where he fences on his spare time. Bruce also fenced for the English National team

I'm not entirely sure I massacred the grammar enough to equal thousand_suns, but at least I made a serious effort!  :P

Bruce, Dio and Halford are probably the best "Heavy metal" singers, not just because they're amazing, but they were pretty influential (Ozzy doesn't count, I hate is singing skills lol).

But in the last few years I fell in love with Jorn Lande's voice. Along with Bruce, he is my favourite singer. And btw I just listened to the new Kiske album with Somerville, he is even more amazing now!
But Bruce will always be Bruce, no one will ever sing Aces High like he did once in the day

A comparison like that assumes that each criterion is equal in value.  That's not necessarily the case.

I now. It's really flawed riteria. Range > Resonance, in my opinion.

I think the above list comes off as a bit of Barlow fan service.  There is no way in HELL that Barlow is more versatile that Bruce.  Bruce can literally sing anything.  I'd take Bruce anyday over Barlow.  That said, Barlow is still an incredible voice, but has more in commong with Tate, imo, than Dickinson.

Actually, the person who made that comparison was a huge Bruce fan and Barlow was his second favourite.

Tate's biggest clone is Michael Kiske, although I think it's pure coincidence that they sound so similar.

Tate's octave range is 4 (A1-A5), while Kiske has solid 3.5.

Halford * Dickinson=Tate (because they are his primary influences)

Tate ~ (supposed to mean "almost equal") Kiske.

Kiske/Halford ~ Bruce Dickinson

God knows what awesome things we can calculate with this info!

I don't think they sound that similar. Do you think so just because both sing "clean" high notes or some other reason?

Yeah, both are very good, but Kiske is slightly better.

Here's a battle between them:

Control - Kiske
Creativity - Tie
Range & Power - Tie
Technique - Kiske.

Is it you who made that or do you have a source where i.e a singer compares them?

I found that on a forum. Not a singer, some musical experts.
Oh ok. I'm curious whether Kiske really has better technique though (as you said, the guy who reviewed them isn't a singer himself), as I read somewhere that Tate is a vocal coach for opera singers when not busy with Queensryche. Also, Tate said in an interview that he's got several offers from opera companies to work with them.

I heard before that Tate has something to do with the opera, but didn't know what...

Oh, and btw, thanks for sharing this! :)

Great technicians don't have to be vocal coaches if they don't want to.
... I really, REALLY hope you're not implying Tate is a poor singer. I know that you're a big fan of Kiske but if that's what you mean, then it's beneath the belt.

Edit: And besides, it's rough to survive as a metal singer these days. Being great technical is by no means a guarantee to make it big - Just look at all the great technical guitarists out there - A lot have a regular job.
Saxon sells a fair amount of records even now - Biff Byford still has another job as a coordinator.

Also, you won't get to be a popular opera vocal coach unless you know your shit.

I only mean that people who don't boast about having invitations can also be great singers. :)

I admire Tate's old deliveries a lot, but he can't hit the high notes anymore, unfortunately.
