1. Sign of the Cross
2. Infinite Dreams
3. Afraid to Shoot Strangers
4. The Clansman
5. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
6. Stranger in a Strange Land
7. Starblind
8. Rime of the Ancient Mariner
9. To Tame a Land
10. The Thin Line Between Love and Hate
11. Journeyman
12. Fear of the Dark
Songs that almost made the cut:
1. Prowler, Aces High, Moonchild, Tailgunner, The Wicker Man, and Different World were all in the running, but Sign of the Cross is the masterpiece of the group.
2. SO DIFFICULT. I was surprised. Remember Tomorrow was my knee-jerk reaction until I remembered Infinite Dreams was also track 2. Children of the Damned, Revelations, Ghost of the Navigator, Rainmaker, and These Colours Don't Run are also stunning. If they were in any other position, they would've probably made the cut.
3. Another tough call. I almost went with The Prisoner, and then I remembered Sea of Madness was track 3, and then I saw ATSS and knew that that was what I'd have to select. But yeah, I thought The Prisoner or Sea of Madness would've made it. Also, shout-out to Murders in the Rue Morgue, Flight of Icarus, Man on the Edge, Brave New World, and Brighter Than a Thousand Suns.
4. This was fairly easier. Contenders were Phantom of the Opera, 22 Acacia Ave, The Evil That Men Do, The Pilgrim, and Coming Home. The real fight was between POTO and The Clansman, but Clansman won out by a hair.
5. This doesn't have the strongest batch of songs, but it has some of my favorites, the ones that nobody talks about (except Dance of Death). Transylvania, The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner, Childhood's End, Dance of Death, The Longest Day, and The Alchemist. I went with Childhood's End, which barely inched ahead of Loneliness. But then I saw that I had forgotten about my favorite album (SSOASS) completely! And that song wiped the others out. The Longest Day would've made the cut if not for the repetitive chorus (thanks for the edit, Mosh!).
6. Koo, this one was difficult! It came down to Still Life, Stranger in a Strange Land, Wasting Love, Dream of Mirrors, Gates of Tomorrow (haters gonna hate), and Out of the Shadows. I went with SIASL, but it was no easy decision.
7. This one doesn't have as many strong songs, but the strong songs in this batch are some of the best of their era. It came down to Killers, Deja Vu, The Clairvoyant, The Fallen Angel, and The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg. I was really struggling and was gonna pick Killers, but then I double-checked and saw Starblind was track 7 and defaulted to it. I really love Killers, though, fantastic tune.
8. I made the decision before I looked at the other choices to avoid the pain. Looking through the albums now, there are some beastly songs here! Prodigal Son, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Alexander the Great, Only the Good Die Young, Como Estais Amigos, The Nomad, Paschenfuckingdale, For the Greater Good of God, The Talisman... Rime just happens to be my favorite Maiden song of all time and the only song that could slay all these beasts.
9. Way easier after track 8! I love Purgatory, The Edge of Darkness, Lord of Light, and The Man Who Would Be King, but To Tame a Land is just superior to all of these in every way. I used to really dislike To Tame a Land, but now it's one of my favorites, top 10, overtook Revelations as my favorite Piece of Mind track. I basically defaulted to it.
10. This was surprisingly difficult. I thought I was gonna go with Mother Russia and was even typing it until I looked through all the albums and saw The Thin Line Between Love and Hate, which is in my top 2 favorite Maiden songs. And then I continued looking and saw When the Wild Wind Blows and almost fell over. These are three top notch songs that could've made this list in nearly any other position. Another contender is Drifter, which I feel is tragically underrated. Same for The Legacy. Anyway, tough nuts for those songs.
11. Pretty easy decision. I was slightly torn because I like The Unbeliever a lot, but then I realized i was kidding myself.
12. Whatever
I'm kind of sad to see no Di'Anno era songs. They totally could've made the list, but they ran into bad luck.
