Look, on "component level", as to speak, I'm sure he's got a lot things of his own going. However, string skipping, sweep picking and tapped arpeggios 8and combos of sweep and tap) have been done by tons of guitarists in a similar way to one another. The thing is, I think you have to look in a bigger perspective. If you listen to Murray, Malmsteen, Petrucci, Vaughan, Wylde (you know it's him when you hear 10000000 pinch harmonics per bar), you can distinguish them from most others, partly because when they surfaced, there wasn't any textbook Metal guitar playing in the same way that there is now. There is now and most people play by it. It's like inbreed, where everybody gets influenced by the same people (which is what Malmsteen tried to break away from, and succeeded back in the early 80's).

Nilsson basically sounds like a very technically advanced modern Metal guitarist - And there are tons of those, that plays their licks slightly different from others, some more melodically, others like Kerry King (i.e. seemingly random notes) but in the bigger picture have the same thing going on.

Re: BEST GUITARISTS EVER GAME! Elimination - Group 8: Round 4

That's the whole theoretical point of view.

I'll wait til the day when you post a vid of someone of these tons of guys who sound like him.

You're going to have a hard time finding lots of other guys who are not only technically this good but who at the same time create such melodic and catchy patterns.

There are lots of guitarists with melodic feel (well, not that much to be honest), lots of technically brilliant guitarists, lots of fast guitarists. On top of that he brings on the riffs (this is not only a solo guitarist poll). This guy brings a rare combination which should be explored by way more metalheads.

(personality is something that Romeo and Petrucci have, along with being technically astonishing)

You sure about Petrucci having a "personality"? All I heard from him were incredibly fast showoffs of various techniques and scales.

Re: BEST GUITARISTS EVER GAME! Elimination - Group 8: Round 4

Paul Wardingham is for instance very similar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zteRWjHTuZ8
Let's not forget Loomis, whom I'm sure Nilsson is influenced by.

Petrucci has a personality for sure - It's been borrowed from him by 1000's of guitarists though. He's only one of the most influential guitarists of the 90's and onwards...

Thanks man! Never heard of him, but I like what he does. It doesn't sound original though.

In fact, I wonder how far back this Wardingham goes because to me it sounds like he is not only influenced by Nilsson, but also by Scar Symmetry. So that's 1-0 for Scar Symmetry and the guy we're talking about.  :D

Nillsson about his influences (source here):

Who were some of your influences early on, and how has that changed?

PN: The first album I got was Kiss’ Alive II – I got it on cassette from my older brother, and I was like: ‘Wow! [imitates Detroit Rock City riff]’ I was blown away by that. All of the guys at school, they were cool – they had started growing long hair and had AC/DC patches on their shirts and everything.

After that, I started listening to Metallica, Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen’s first album, and by the end of the 80’s I listened a lot to all of the guys from Shrapnel Records, like Cacophony with Marty Friedman and Jason Becker, Greg Howe, Joey Tafolla – all of these guys. I picked up a lot of stuff from them, and Steve Vai of course. Then I started listening a lot to jazz fusion guys, mostly Holdsworth. He became my number one guitar player.

I'm sure he's at least partly influenced by him (he sounds very similar. You know, this inbreeding stuff I was talking about  :innocent:).

Nillsson about his influences (source here):
Sounds about right. Friedman, Becker and Malmsteen. Pretty much like Loomis. Again, this inbreed stuff.  :P

Nilsson's right about Holdsworth being utterly awesome. Hell, if Yngwie Malmsteen publicly displays admiration for another gutiarist, then he must be good (Not only because Yngwie's awesome in his own right, but moreso because he seems to be a bit of an ass regarding other players: http://www.angelfire.com/musicals/zimi/pages/misc/yngwie_rates.html
I also recall reading a similar article where he knocks other guitarists too ).

Edit: I also read an interview where he slays Hammet some more (roughly: "I love Metallica, they are the best. They do everythig so damn good and then this pretend-guitarist starts "soloing" and ruins everything! He's so damn terrible").

Re: BEST GUITARISTS EVER GAME! Elimination - Group 8: Round 4

Hehe very tactical.

I only know Holdsworth from his colleborations with Tony Williams.

Re: BEST GUITARISTS EVER GAME! Elimination - Group 8: Round 5

GROUP 8: ROUND 4 RESULTS:
Uli Jon Roth (SCORPIONS) and Zakk Wylde (BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, OZZY OSBOURNE) are eliminated.

One of these guitarists will get eliminated, others will be promoted to Top 32 - I vote against Stevie Ray Vaughan. Btw. this is the last group stage round.

Re: BEST GUITARISTS EVER GAME! Elimination - Group 8: Round 5

Guys, what Stevie ever did to you.

Re: BEST GUITARISTS EVER GAME! Elimination - Group 8: Round 5

Oh, forgot to write my vote.

Janick Gers. Great songwriter, but not better than the other guys on the group as a guitarist.

Re: BEST GUITARISTS EVER GAME! Elimination - Group 8: Round 5

Bump - someone needs to break the tie between SRV and Michael Romeo so that I can start the next round :D

Re: BEST GUITARISTS EVER GAME! Elimination - Top 32: Round 1

Michael Schenker
Stevie Ray Vaughan
