BEST BAND EVER: Results!

It’s possible to share opinions politely. I think all the survivors have a kind of toxic atmosphere. Like kids arguing about whose dad is stronger or something. Just my view on things.

Not sure what exactly was impolite about the Petrucci-Lifeson conversation.

Okay, so let me be polite and let me rephrase my possibly offensive previous post.

I just get triggered by the rabid fandoms of certain bands, especially Rush and Queen. I think both bands are excellent and I want to be clear about that. Both have managed to put out exquisite, awesome albums (Farewell, Pictures, Clockwork for the former, Jazz or Races for the latter). But both are also... kinda limited or flawed.
I can possibly put my finger on it much better with Queen - none of them is really a virtuoso, they rely on the studio tricks a wee bit too much, they don't have the groove nor the riffs, really (okay, you have Dead on Time, I admit) ... almost always when they try to "rock out" in the old, classic way (Sweet Lady, Brighton Rock, Hammer to Fall) it just feels phoney. They're like a... "studio product", if you please and I can't help but hear it everywhere. A "plastic" band, of sorts, though a really great one at that. Also they "Eightied" themselves very soon and not in a very good way. I can take Radio Gaga only as a guilty pleasure, in the same way I can take We Built This City. Sorry.

It's much less clear and more subjective with Rush, possibly feeling their artsiness sometimes gets in the way of a quality control, their pompousness being sometimes hard to swallow and Geddy's vocals being really grating if you have them on the whole album. Also, not a fan of Peart, the alleged best drummer ever. Dunno, when I hear Lopez on Deliverance (the album), I can hear it. When I hear Nicko or Portnoy anywhere, I can hear it. When I hear Airto or, heck, the Allman squad anywhere I get it. I don't get it with Peart.

So this unlimited adoration just gets on my nerves. Like, I get it you like them, I like them too (sometimes even a lot, I'm probably one of the few people who actually enjoy deep cuts like Drowse or Night Comes Down), but let's just not overstate everything, okay?

Same with Dio - he was awesome and thrilling and very consistent... but maybe too consistent. I miss variation, any kind of subtlety, he just might be the worłd's best one trick pony to me. And I prefer that trick done by Fogerty.

So when everyone takes for granted these are the best and we don't even discuss that, that's a given, I dunno, I may be a bit tired of that.

I hope that was polite.

Lifeson > Iommi

Iommi is such a difficult guitarist for me to assess. I think his lead playing, while good, isn't all that special and he isn't particularly great with textures either. But his riff-writing game is unmatched. Lifeson is probably a better pick as a complementary piece because of his versatility and grand sound, but Iommi is a better pick as a bandleader.

Night Prowler posted videos for you to inform yourself.

For someone who is so obsesed with biases and informed choices you seem to be unable to recognize that maybe some people have things occuring which might keep them from being able to make these informed choices at this time and as a result have chosen not to. The only way a survey can be accurate is if completion of it is voluntary. I volunteered what I was able to at this time.

Yeah his solos are good, but they don't come out as centerpiece of the song and he doesn't break through the mix very well. One of my friends who loves Black Sabbath said about his solo style "sounds like Iommi and his guitar are in a fierce argument".

I'm not sure what you're tired of. That people really like Queen and Rush? It sounds like you don't like them as much as the hardcore fans do, which is fine, most people don't. Hence, hardcore fans. But you also seem bothered that people like these bands more than you do, which seems less fine. What is there to discuss there? I'm not going to like Rush less because someone is tired of all the acclaim they get.

I like the Lifeson and Iommi comparisons because I go to neither guitarist for his lead playing. In fact, I hope this hypothetical band is light on guitar solos. Lifeson is slightly more enjoyable as a soloist, but even he only has a handful of solos I really enjoy (I like him best from about 1978 to 1981).

But with that being said, they are both top tier rock guitar players for their inventive approach to guitar. Iommi's riff writing is unmatched and Lifeson was great when it comes to texture, chords, and just fitting perfectly within the song. Neither are going to blow my mind with their soloing, but they are both greatly influential to me with songwriting and just knowing their place in the band.

I like to imagine this hypothetical band using Iommi's riffs combined with Lifeson's lush guitar sound underneath.

This "best band ever" is going to end up being mostly Rush + coin toss between Mercury and Dio. Which, well, I guess you could guess from the very beginning. And everyone's fine with that.
That's my problem.

It's very hard to believe that you'd express the same sentiment if the beloved favorites of Maidenfans were people you are a bigger fan of.

If you'd shown this much passion in your track-by-track album descriptions then you might have said something interesting! Come on man, you spent months and months and months describing every single song in albums you'd only listened to once. I do not believe that you don't have the time to listen to two songs to make a binary decision. You could have listened to each of them and then told us about how solid or amazing the vocal lines are. Then you could have given an arbitrary rating out of ten!

Iommi is good, but I can’t stand Ozzy. Much prefer him with Dio. Sebastian Bach had the looks and the voice, both not for so long. Epica no comment, Clutch is kinda cool.

Different context. Different times and yes I had time to do that then. For someone who seems to insist on bringing up the 365 albums quite frequently but saying they dislike it seems a little backwards.
