Well that's what he picked. He never said that everyone was restricted to rock.

How are we expected to go about the voting. I'm still not entirely sure. Is this a most influential/important rocks albums poll or are we trying to find the favorite ever rock albums of Maidenfans.com? Should I vote on whether or not I like an album personally or should I vote on how I feel that album changed the face of rock music?

I'd say "your best" = "your favourite".
And "Maidenfans' best ever" = "a total of everybody's picks".

So follow what you like.

Foro's got it.

The intention of the game was to determine our (the regular Maidenfans posters) consensus favourite albums. So yes, Sixes, vote your personal faves, and 425, please add your votes based on what you know. It was my hope to start a game that everybody could participate in because everybody has their favourites, and chances are a number of them are on the list. If you don't know an album, it's obviously not a favourite, so vote it out. Hopefully people will discover some new music, but that's not the point here; we've got other threads for that kind of discussion. Nobody expects an album you've never heard before to become your favourite during the course of a game.

As for the jazz question, I guess I'm torn.

On the one hand, I think it would be really cool to discover the third favourite album by a big group of Iron Maiden fans was actually by Miles Davis. And I wanted to keep the game open-ended.

But I think adding in other genres will unnecessarily complicate things, because clearly our starting point was hard rock/metal/prog and we all like that type of music. The game is massive enough as it is and we already have people saying they're worried they don't know the existing albums well enough.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd rather be adding players to the game than albums.
So jazz is out — stick to the hard rock/metal/prog.

Also, when you nominate an album, can you please include the year it was released?
And if you know something has reached four votes, please point it out.

Thanks.

Well that's fair. Still, I think some albums have a crossover appeal that would be a reason to include them. Kind Of Blue is one of those. Another example would be Thriller by Micheal Jackson. But I understand why these won't be included.

I take it only studio albums count, right? I haven't taken the time to comb through all the suggestions, but three that popped to mind that weren't on the first page were:

- Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet
- Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
- Jeff Buckley - Grace

I'm pretty sure Jeff's album especially isn't all that popular, but just in case, I thought I'd mention it. And I second Nevermind the Bollocks.

Not sure if they appeal to everybody here but I'd like to nominate (or recommend in general) :

Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde
Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks
Eric Clapton - 461 Ocean Boulevard
The Band - Music From Big Pink

I just noticed the lack of Zappa. Nominating:

The Mothers Of Invention - We're Only In It For The Money (1968)
Frank Zappa - Overnite Sensation (1973)

I second the nominations of Birds of Fire and The Inner Mounting Flame by Manavishnu Orchestra, making the count 4 for Birds of Fire.

If I didn't count wrongly, the albums with three nominations are :

Jethro Tull - Songs from the Wood
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear
The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts
Van der Graaf Generator - Godbluff
Yes - Close to the Edge
Genesis - Foxtrot
King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic
The Who - Quadrophenia

This is fun, I'll try to help mckindog as much as I can with this stuff. He still has to check up though, I might have mistakes.

From no. 5's list, I support the inclusion of these albums:
The Who - Quadrophenia
Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks
King Crimson - Red
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Rammstein - Mutter
Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Opeth - Damnation
Death - The Sound Of Perseverance
Dire Straits - Dire Straits
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Death - Spiritual Healing
Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Testament - The Gathering
The Who - Tommy
Dire Straits - Communiqué

and since Rammstein - Mutter is in, then Rammstein - Reise, Reise must be in, so I suggest that one too :)

From no. 5's list..

It's Flash that did the job, I was hoping -ahem- to initiate a chain based on that list, everyone's putting his recommendations on red, or modify accordingly in case of seconding. Like this the job is distributed and thus more polite towards dog & Flash.

Awesome guys, thanks for the help.
For further nominations, why don't we continue to cut and paste Flash's list, adding names like No5 did?

And if we could plug in the years that would be much appreciated.

edit: umm, just like No5 said. Beat me to the post.

What in gods name is Manavishnu Orchestra, and how in god's name is it getting more support than the Stones??

I'll second Beggars Banquet on principle.

Manavishnu Orchestra is one of, if not the, the greatest jazz fusion bands ever assembled.

By the way I love the fact that my nomination of Hybrid Theory has found support, I honestly thought it was gonna be ridiculed when I posted it. Linkin Park's follow-up album, Meteora, may also deserve to be there but since it sounds too similar to the first one, I didn't nominate it.

Hm. If this isn't a rock list then maybe I should nominate Carlos Klieber and the VPO's performance of Beethoven's Fifth and Seventh Symphonies, widely regarded as one of the, if not THE, greatest classical recordings ever.
