Surtur Rising joins the game!

Note 1:
On all versions of the album, there's either a hidden song between A Beast Am I and Doom Over Dead Man or it's stuck to the the end of A Beast Am I.
It's actually the intro for Doom Over Dead Man, and here are the proper versions of these two songs:

Note 2:
4 covers came out of this album's sessions. They aren't in the game, but check them out anyway!

You...
1) don't like SOAD, or
2) don't like the cover?

Genuinely interested, I dunno why people hate that cover so much...

It's just weird. I liked SOAD back in the day and I can still rock out to a lot of their best songs, but Amon Amarth covering them just sounds weird. They are both such specific bands and they are sonically very differently. Honestly, I think SOAD is one of those bands that can't really be covered without reinventing the song in some way. AA added that interesting chant hall vocal for the chorus which is nice, but overall I just don't think it works.

Oh, alright then, iryo. I kinda like it when a band covers some unexpected songs... it's kinda boring whenever a thrash band covers Slayer, or power metal band covers Helloween etc. I think this one wouldn't sound so weird if you didn't know it's a cover... AA really put their stamp on it. And that goes for all their other covers.

I usually do as well, I just feel like they should have changed far more in the song to put their stamp on it. As it is it just sounds like a heavier SOAD with guttural screaming.

So Foro votes for half of the With Oden / Twilight songs and only 1 from Surtur Rising? :uhm:

Surtur Rising is a good album, but the 4 preceding albums are better than it.

From the older albums, I try to protect songs that I want to go through, by voting on lesser (sometimes still great) songs. If I don't do this, you (plural) eliminate songs I like the most.

Which four albums? There's hardly anything left. Most strong songs from previous albums are eliminated. Only 2 go through (unless some survive longer, but I can't trust too much on that, the voting pattern is very unpredictable; this band has "too" many good songs and people are divided). So I am dealing as well as possible with these rules. I'd even say it's the only way to do this well.

I'll vote for more Surtur songs when I know the album better. Most sounded very good to me during first listening. I didn't have "immediate" dislike feelings.

I mean preceding as in the 4 albums that appeared before this. So Versus, Fate of Norns, With Oden and Twilight. And if you want less "unpredictability", then I'll just state this now. I will not be voting any of the With Oden or Twilight songs left in the poll until at least the finals. Because I think those 10 are more than good enough to be the 10 left standing. Additionally, a bunch of strong songs did get promoted (although you lot did kill some and tried to kill others). To me, voting Death in Fire is unfathomable because it would be like voting Rime in a Maiden survivor or Painkiller in a Priest survivor (to use some examples).

For Victory of Death: easily among the best (melodic) riffing from Surtur Rising.

Agreed, but unfortunately the vocal/melodies aren't as successful as the riffing. The whole middle of the album in general has some average-at-best vocal arrangements. Great riffs, but the songs are just okay overall.

Awesome songs: Slaves, Doom
Good songs: Wrath, Beast
OK songs: Destroyer, Frej (mostly because of riffs, forgettable vocals)
Mediocre: War, Töck, Regrets, For Victory - not that bad, but compared to most other AA songs, quite forgettable and forced.

Once again, I differ greatly on this album. First 3 tracks are great, last track is great, and Beast is really cool. Everything in between the bookends is mediocre.

Frej can now move to "Good songs", it's a grower.
