It took me a year to fully appreciate Images and Words and it has taken me well over two years to understand Opeth's "genius". The only reason I've been so patient with both was because I knew there was something great there I wasn't getting... and when I did.... WOW. That also happened to me with certain Maiden songs. Rime of the Ancient Mariner. I liked it but was very blah about it. Yet lately... Man i'm playing it over and over it just fucking rocks...

I've always been a fan of Opeth from the start. They are a little bit repetative, but they've got an insane amount of talent and musicianship. This isn't the kind of band your average Joe will appreciate. You have to be one of them artsy people like me. Dream Theater I also started off liking quite a bit, but they are a little boring for me now, because they keep repeating themselves. I can appreciate their talent, and their music, but it's not the type of thing I want to listen to around the clock. Maybe once in a few months or so.

just to let you guys know Mustaine was on the list [!--emo&^_^--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/happy.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'happy.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Exactly, both good points... actually, all the bands I have cd's of are from good to great (helloween, iron maiden, iced earth, DT, Opeth ect). But NONE of them will I listen to around the clock, they do get boring, no matter how great they are. I haven't listened to a maiden or Metallica (form the 80's hehe) cd in months. What I do now is I turn on my computer press play on iTunes and let the chips fall where they may. It is a THOUSAND times better. I'm always surprised, I always like the song that is playing, and best of all I never get bored.

Jeah, everything get's boring after a while, but I like the idea of listening to the hole album. I mean if i really want to listen to music, I never turn my computer on. I just go to my room and put some record in to the cd player and listen to it. When Im at computer the music might just go by. I mean that I dont listen to it, it's a bit of just backround noise. Ofcourse you listen to it, but not as focused as if it was coming from an cd. There's nothing like putting the x-factor to the cd player at night before you go to sleep and really listen to it. That is why I buy cd's.

Yes, I love WinAmp, but I think for some albums, to get the feel of the album, and to hear the songs how they were supposed to be heard, you have to listen to the entire album all the way through. Having said this the only time I do this is when I'm travelling, so its usually when I'm wearing headphones.

You can pick out so many more details you'd miss if you listen to songs on WinAmp or iTunes.

just to get back to dream theater for a minute...im a relative new DT fan..i just have images and words and downloaded train of thought...it took me well over 3-4 months to "get" images and words and now i love it...one of my favourite albums...train of thought i have just started listenign to...but i can feel like im gonna be loving this one as well.

To answer indiana and dogigniter: You definately lose somthing in mp3 or AAC files, but I do it to have my favorite music playing literally 24/7. I too only listen to cd's when i'm in my car or at school on my discman. I ONLY buy cds, the music i have on my computer is my own cd collection. I don't download because I like to have the cds.
As for DT, images and words IS a very good album and I'm glad you got into it Evilution. you should get (as in purchase lol) Scenes from a Memory pt. II. In my opinion their best work. 6 Degrees of inner tension is ok. Train of thought is cool in the sense that they finally went really heavy but it is a far cry from original. You can hear Metallica and Megadeth all over that cd. The stand out track is Stream of Conciousness which frankly kicks a lot of ass.

Usually I only download albums, and I always have a .m3u playlist of the album, so it's easy for me to enqueue the album itself.
