Adrian, Janick and Dave's guitars and Steve's basses

Judging by the videos he's posted and one of the comments on that, that's his thing. Exaggerates the value of each and any guitar he acquires on a rather masturbatory video, then tries to sell them for a ridiculous sum based on said (largely invented) value due to claimed uniqueness or rarity. I have to question his business model because it doesn't seem like a very sustainable way to operate to me.

1 long-arse Tour 3 tremolo systems... The story of Adrian's Black Lado Earth

What I think happened, based on interviews and photos...

In 1984 Iron Maiden recorded Powerslave. The record showed quite a bit of evolution in Adrian's guitar playing. Partly responsible was his blue sunburst Ibanez Roadstar, which he recieved while being endorsed by Ibanez. That guitar had something no guitar of H had before: a locking tremolo system. Adrian relied quite heavily on that while recording songs for Powerslave. And while H liked what the guitar did in studio, it just didn't feel right on stage, so he needed some new guiars that would do the job on stage, since none of his guitars had tremolos. Yes, there was the SG with the Bigsby, but, doing divebombs with a bigsby is just a suicide on stage tuning-wise. So, for that job, Adrian ordered 2 new guitars, a gray sunburst and a black Lado Earth.

So, Adrian began the World Slavery Tour mostly playing 3 guitars: the black and silverburst Earth's and his Gibson SG with bigsby. Both Earths at this point had stock Lado pickups and stock Lado tremolos, which were quite similar to stock Fender tremolos and, most importantly, had no locking nuts.

TNOTB Live from Poland 1984, with H playing the black Lado.

I assume, during England shows H swapped his SG for his trusty Les Paul Goldtop and began using that guitar again (there are photos from Bristol comfirming that). Since that guitar sounds so great, he decided to switch bridge pickups in both Lados to DiMarzio Super Distortions (both black at this time), hoping to match the amazing sound of the Goldtop.

While the Lados were better than the Roadstar, they still didn't bring the tuning stability Adrian wanted. So, I assume, while in Germany, in October 1984, H got a locking Rockinger Tremolo system which he fitted on the grayburst Lado and a Kahler nut, which was the less used guitar at the time of the two. It wasn't perfect, but it was better than the stock tremolo, so Ade began to use the grayburst as his primary guitar. Soon he added the rockinger tremolo to the black Lado too, which was now used less, since he got used to the feel of the silverburst one and wanted to use the Goldtop too, because of the sound. Last picture in this post (photo in the bottom left corner) shows this phase (grayburst with a Rockinger tremolo and the black one with the stock one).

H with the black Lado, with Rockinger Tremolo + Kahler nut installed.

So, the tour was going by and the black Lado Earth was now a backup/warm up guitar. Adrian still hasn't resolved his tuning issues (switching guitars almost every song), so he decided to try something new. A Floyd Rose. He commisioned someone to install it in his backup guitar, the black Lado. The guitar recieved a gold unit, a new white DiMarzio Super Distortion, but the old Kahler locking nut remained on guitar. I assume this experiment didn't bring the desired results (possibly, because the locking nut of Kahler tremolo is behind the original nut of the guitar) and H kept switching guitars on stage between almost every song. The black Earth remained a warm up / backup guitar.

Bottom left: The black Lado Earth in autumn 1984 (original spec, minus DiMarzio Super Distortion in bridge).

Edit: The original tremolo on the black Lado was a non-locking Rockinger tremolo.

So experiments with tremolos on the black Lado Earth didn't bring the desired results, and Adrian was forced to switch guitars for the reminder of the tour between almost every song. But after the tour, Grover Jackson built him the guitar, that solved all of his issues. The white HSH Jackson Superstrat...

So, this is the what I learned and what I assume happened with Adrian's Black Lado Earth, which is IMO the best looking Lado guitar he has ever owned (not a big fan of Lado shape, but this one looked great imo). I wonder where this guitar is now...

Hopefully you enjoyed this.

I think it is fair to say that Adrian is not really associated with any brand or type of guitar, he's had 'em all. Dave certainly for over a decade was synonymous (I know I spelt that wrong) with a black strat in a humbucker, single coil, humbucker configuration. To me at least that was the look of Maiden, THAT guitar was just so obvious and apart from Eddie Van Halen's basterdized strat Dave was the only one that wanted his sound and was prepared to really change the look of his guitar to get it.

Sur les enregistrements "live", la configuration est toujours comme indiquée comme ci-dessus.

Sometimes in the studio, some licks, melodies or solos appear on the channel which is used ny one particular guitarrist 99% of the times.

On Brave New World and Dance Of Death albums, it seems that the most of the main melodies are set on the central channel. On Brave New World, Adrian seems to have mosat of his parts on left channel and Dave on the central channel (listen to Brave New World and you'll notice this). Then, to distinguish who are making what it depends on an accurate ear to notice each guitarrist trademarks (vibratos, patterns in phrasing, often used licks, etc). On Virtual XI, Brave New World and Dance Of Death albums, i didn't point out the single melodies each guitarrist make 'cos they are most 'codas', so it would make the solography even longer and knowing the channel configurations, things become easier and clearer.

However, on the last 2 live albums, the configuration is:
Left channel: Dave Murray
Central channel: Adrian Smith
Right channel: Janick Gers

For the gearheads, Jan and H's 2019 setups:
11004

Stage right guitar tech Sean Brady looks after Adrian Smith, having been his tech for the last 16+ years. “Over that time, as the type of equipment evolved, we have found different ways to make it easier for Adrian to do what he needs to during the show. The basis for his sound has always been Marshall amplification and cabinets, using Celestion speakers, with a Shure wireless system. At the moment, we’re using Marshall JVM 410H heads, as they are very versatile with four channels and three voices per channel. They are also MIDI controllable, which gives Adrian a lot of options during the show.”

RF for guitar has also evolved, Brady notes. “We’ve just brought in the new Shure Axient wireless system on this leg of the tour and are very happy with the sound and its ease of use. We use the Dunlop remote rack Wah unit to allow Adrian to have a remote Wah pedal out on stage without having to send the signal down 120 feet of cable but still having that great Dunlop Wah sound! For the last eight years or so we have been using a Voodoo Lab GCX audio switcher and Ground Control Pro MIDI pedalboard. This lets Adrian control various stomp boxes in his rack, his JVM heads and his Lexicon FX unit, using the pedalboard out on stage and allows me to do the same from a second board I have by his rack. The GCX gives a good transparent audio signal and gives us a versatile option for the different stomp boxes and FX loops he needs. At the moment, he’s using a Boss CH1 Super Chorus, Boss CS3 compressor/sustainer, Ibanez Tube Screamers and a DigiTech Eric Clapton ‘Crossroads’ pedal. His main FX unit for different delays is the Lexicon MX300. We have used Lexicon for the last 10 years and it gives him a lot of flexibility with his delay sounds and the control of them through his MIDI pedalboard.”

Stage left guitar tech Eddie Marsh is backline and guitar technician for Janick Gers. Gers has used the same basic style rig for many years now. “We are currently using Voodoo Lab ground Control Pro plus, the CGX audio switching system to control all patch changes that I’m doing during the show. Janick also has a bespoke Pete Cornish switcher made to his specification with EQ and various effects like Tube Screamer, boosts, etc. We’re using the Shure Axient wireless system, which is new to us this time around, and I have to say it’s been faultless for me this on the U.S. leg of the tour. The main part of Janick’s rig is all about the Marshalls, we have two JFX units along with JMP1 preamps and the Marshall 9200 power amps. Everything is pretty standard stuff, apart from the power amps, which have been tweaked. We double each Marshall in the rig as backups in case anything goes down during a show. We also have various external guitar pedals, like boosts and an Echoplex.”

Article also includes interviews with Pooch, Gonzo, Mike Hackman and the new monitoring engineer, Tater.

Does anybody know about the Jacksons Dave Murray played in the early 90s? I saw a red wine strat type Jackson at least, not sure if there's any other. Maybe a white in the Raising Hell concert, but I think it is actually a Fender, not a Jackson.

Edit: Ok, just found it in the first page of the post.

Another different Jackson
I miss the blue colour of Steve's bass btw

Me too (abt Steve's bass).
Look at that monitor with the blue stripe, I wonder if that is some gear from Gallien Krueger (since this photo is from the 7th Son tour) perhaps? I remember reading in an interview with H from 88 (before the tour started) where he said that he had some kind of special monitoring system made for the tour, which apparently made his onstage sound, sound (more or less) exactly like it did on the album, but he wouldn't go into detail about it. I may have read it in a Metal Hammer magazine, but I'm not entirely sure about that unfortunately. I think Adrian and Dave both used Gallien Krueger 2100SEL heads for the 7th Son album & Tour.

The following extract is taken form the book by Stjepan Juras about Seventh Son of a Seventh Son album:
Adrian remembers bringing close to twenty different guitars to the recording but still going back for his main Jackson Strat: He used the new- model Gaillen-Kruegers amps with his personal effects, rack-mounted, accompanied by a Lexicon delay and a T.C. Electronic 2290. He also used 2 x 12-inch Gallien Krueger stacks dotted on the stage as a monitoring system, and the specific details of those he kept a secret because of what might end up happening 'once people find out I've got me own system...!“ Also, Adrian found a way to transfer his own studio sound to the stage: "I've got real studio-quality effects for the road this time and with some help from the record's second engineer, Stephane Wissner, I can get the same sound on stage. The Germans are so efficient; he was really on the case in the studio. He wrote down every setting for every effect I used on the record and then sent them to me. I went through all of his notes and set about duplicating the sound on all my new gear, and now I can almost entirely recreate the sound exactly as it was on the LP. I used to just plug in and play, but now my stage presentation is going to be real technical. I'll see how it all works out, though after a couple of weeks I'll probably end up bypassing it all and saying, 'Screw it, just plug me straight in’”.

Does anybody know which guitar did Dave use to record the The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Powerslave? I know he mainly use his black strat, but I think at that time he was using Ibanez, Dean, Gibson (Les Paul and I think he used a SG too).

So, I know Adrian basically used the Ibanez Destroyer in Red Apple Finish for TNOTB, the Gibson Melody Maker for POM and the Ibanez Roadstar for Powerslave.

And I don't mean which guitars he used on stage during the tours, but the guitars he used to record every song on those albums.

Thank you, kindly.

Dave used the Kossoff Strat for basically everything before Somewhere In Time AFAIK.

Ade used mainly his Destroyer for TNOTB (with the exception of COTD and possibly TNOTB, which was his LP Goldtop), POM is indeed the Melody Maker and Powerslave is indeed the Roadstar.

Ok thanks for the answer. Anyway to know which songs were played by Adrian using his Jackson with MIDI controller? I know Stranger in a Strange Land as seen on the official video, but not sure about any other song in SIT and SSOASS.

Thank you very much.
