I finally got back home at 2am this morning after driving back - I was battered, bruised, just about deaf, lost my voice and about ready to pass out from being soo tired. Sod it though, IT WAS F*CKING WORTH IT! What an incredible day all round!
Maiden were absolutely on fire from start to finish, they were sh*t hot and on top form as usual, but on a whole though this was the best performance that I've witnessed to date - I'm really glad that the engineers and the mixers got the entire sound absolutely spot on in my opinion, Download last year was a bit hit & miss at times and due to the wind too. I got to my spot ready for Maiden just before Deftones started their set and I was positioned probably about 5 rows from the very front and just towards the right. For the first 90 mins or so before Maiden came on I got chatting to a few very cool fellow Maiden fans and had a right laugh - it's so great when you go to these festivals and you mingle with some of the people as a lot of you will know. The crowd really started to build up heavily just as Deftones finished and it felt quite packed (and the noise levels of the crowd were getting louder & louder too!).
Then finally as 8:45pm approached, the Doctor Doctor intro appeared following by the stage prep curtains falling and the incredible atmosphere started. The intro to Moonchild follows and I don't think I've ever heard soo many people singing the intro ever, just brilliant! However, Maiden bursting onto stage when they did was just the icing on the cake and all the pyrotechnics too! And then... within a minute of Maiden bursting on the stage the massive crowd surges started - it started to get insane, unbearable and I was nearly struggling to breathe - no to mention how much I was sweating from top to bottom as well with the heat! (if any of you on here who were right near the front would know exactly what I'm talking about!) and I must admit, the rest of Moonchild, CIPWM, The Prisoner & some of 2MTM was just a tad difficult to follow due to the power of the crowd surges.
Just as The Prisoner was finishing, I drew back a little bit further towards the right & out of the way of it all and I managed to position myself to a much more stable position which was nearly level with the right screen. Revelations came on and I was in full sync again - my god it's soo good to finally hear this song live !! The Trooper & TNOTB really got the crowd going as well, I don't think their was one person who wasn't singing the chorus to it - immense to say the least. Then one of the highlight songs to the setlist in my opinion appeared - The Phantom Of The Opera! I do agree with other reports though that they did play it a little bit slower than usual, but in a way it's to be expected but it still sounded excellent and it was a shame that their was a pyrotechnic problem during the solo though as already mentioned, though Bruce still made a cracking joke of it!
RTTH & Wasted Years, by this time the crowd from where I was standing were really on fire and going nuts, especially during RTTH. Then the epic of the night arrived, SSOASS! This is the second time I've heard it live and for them to play it again just like they did at Donington last year was amazing - though for me last night was much better, to hear everyone singing the chrorus & the rhythm note to it as well sent shivers down my spine - and to top off the pyrotechnics and effects too!
FOTD - Need I say more. During the chorus parts I could barely hear Maiden over the crowd! Iron Maiden - I love the Seventh Son Eddie at the centre of the stage
And then after it went berzerk after Maiden temporarily left the stage, no one around me or nearby was under the impression that Maiden had finished their set as they knew they would come back on. Then the Churchill intro started, yep, that's it - ACES HIGH! This really got the crowd raring to go again and the atmosphere by this point was out of this world, and once again the pyrotechnics - it's crazy to think how much heat these things give off from a distance as well, you can really feel it!
TETMD - One of the Maiden songs that holds a place in my heart, sadly by this point my voice had perished very much and I could barely sing any longer!
Hearing the chorus sang by everyone else was just awesome. And finally, Sanctuary! This is the first time that I've heard it live and in a way I'm glad that they returned this old classic back to the set, and Bruce's speech during the middle was very touching as well - and I do think that what he was saying was in relation to a new album being in the works in the near future.
And that was it really, though as some people have echo'd and I thought exactly the same - when Maiden delayed the ending Monty Python song for 4-5 minutes, I really thought that they were going to burst back onto the stage at any second to do one last final song, but they didn't
Ahh well, they played a fantastic set once again in my opinion and yesterday as a whole will be a day for me to always remember and I loved every minute of it from start to finish. Not only that, but to see Ghost, Anthrax, Frank Turner & Deftones as well was simply amazing - I really need to get into these bands more again (especially Deftones!).
I'm really looking forward to seeing Maiden again very soon in the near future, I really hope that it is sometime next year be it them promotion a new album or them playing a few gigs running up to a new album!
