2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil

At the end Van Persie really couldn't go on playing or at least he wasn't able to receive the ball well/participate in attacks. He had been sick for a few days and apparently wasn't that fit yet. Van Gaal also wanted to win the match before penalties came. That's why he brought Huntelaar (and therefore Krul was not possible).

Cillessen has been a strong goalkeeper throughout the whole tournament but he really has trouble with penalties. In fact, he has never stopped one, ever.
I am curious how the next coach, Guus Hiddink, will look at this "problem".

Well, naturally, I am very disappointed about all this. Now let the Germans win.

Yep, they said that in the commentary over here (that Cillessen had never stopped a penalty in his professional career), which I found quite incredible. And after learning that fact, it became more obvious to me why Van Gaal went with Krul in the previous match for penalties. It seems also, that it was intention to do the same thing in the Argentina match:

"If I could have substituted Jasper, I would have done, but I'd already used three substitutes so couldn't do that. I subbed Janmaat for Indi because he had a yellow card already and was often too late and wasn't executing well. I didn’t want to take a risk on Nigel de Jong being injured and he was the free man in midfield and Clasie can play going forward better than Nigel. I subbed van Persie because he was exhausted."

The biggest difference from football (or "soccer") to other teams sports is that the basic rule in this one is that you only need to score one and not allow any goal, to win.
I'm pretty sure this is true in all team sports.

I'm pretty sure this is true in all team sports.

I think that it might be true in some particular cases, but due to the nature of most sports, it's unlikely part of the game.

Due to their offensive nature, like most indoor teams sports, you need to keep scoring to win, like in Basketball (three different scoring types, non-contact type of sport), Handball (passive play) and in Volleyball (set games) too for obvious reasons. In Rugby games, there's two different scoring types, and you can always score at distance without opposition.

Tell me of another team sport where it's possible a pre-game tactic to win a game by only one goal, or in other words, a pre-game tactic where winning by 1-0 can be controlled.

Less than in the past, but you will see that in Hockey and baseball too

Ok, i'm not familiar with those two. ;) Though i've seen Baseball games in the past, and as far as i know, in Baseball both teams have a chance to play in the offensive and defensive sides in similar conditions, right? I mean, they have the chance to always score in any game?

I don't know much about Ice Hockey, but i thought it was easier to score goals.

I do not want to derail the thread but

Hockey and soccer are relatively similar ... some teams in Hockey when they get a lead will go into a defensive shell and try to keep play in the center of the ice and reduce greatly the ability of the other team to score. This happens less now than 10+ years ago due to a combination of more skilled players and rules changes. But on average teams score 2.75 goals per game, so it is not very high scoring

In baseball, it is true each team gets 9 turns on offense in a regulation game, but when a team has a lead, especially in a 1-0 game, it is because the pitcher is effectively removing opportunities for the other team based on how he is pitching and teams will bring in specialist pitchers as needed as the game goes on to keep it that way.

A long time ago (1950s), American football was very defensively oriented, that is a rarity anymore due to rules changes and more talent on the field

Ok, bearfan and LC, learning new things.

Didn't realize that was possible outside soccer.

HA! HA!

I feel just very slightly sorry for David Luiz though. That's what he gets for leaving Chelsea, though. :devil2:

The German commentator remarked laconically, "and it's even offside, that says everything about this game."

Only a madman would start David Luiz after the horror show he put on in the semis. He already has an assist today :D
