2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil

Brazil conceded 10 goals in last 2 games.

Van Gaal used all 23 players in his squad :D

From this Brazil team, I'd only pick Thiago Silva, Neymar and maybe Oscar in the near future. Maybe that kid Bernard too. The rest was absolutely abysmal, especially Sideshow Bob who was at fault for at least 8 of those 10 goals.

They have a medal but for some reason their semi-final was strange. I expected more from them against Argentina.

Ah, ah, took me a while to figure it out who was Bob. :D

Congrats to Holland on a very impressive performance throughout the tournament. They should have played in the final.
Once again they peaked too soon. :innocent: Still. 4th, 2nd and 3rd from the last 5 World Cups is a phenomenal record. Holland really need to make the most of these semi-finals though. This year was surely the last chance for Robben, van Persie and Sneijder to win the World Cup too, at least as guaranteed starters.

This Brazilian side has to be the worst Brazilian team of all time. Or at least the worst since the World Cup as we know it has been in existence. They were lucky to get as far as they did, helped by biased decisions from officials, and perhaps opponents more in awe of the Brazilian name, than focussing on the actual team itself. Germany ripped them apart, and weren't even playing in top gear in the 2nd half of that match. Similarly, Holland weren't playing to full capacity, as it was only a 3rd place game, but they still made Brazil look very inept and ordinary in comparison. Brazil have always had good teams in the past, even when they haven't won the world cup, but this Brazilian team (especially in defense) are, as Alan Hansen would say, shocking, diabolical, and abysmal. lol

Really hoping the Germans can become the first European side to win a world cup on American soil tonight! :)

Brazil's defensive lineup IS their biggest strength. A lineup of Dani Alves, Marcelo, David Luiz and Thiago Silva is second to none. Their team defense, however..

Silva should have been sent off within the first two minutes, and only lack of bottle from the referee kept him on the field. You can debate whether or not it was a foul (I personally think it was, even if Robben made a meal of it), but the ref gave it as a foul, and therefore should have also shown a red card. As being the last man, and preventing a clear goal scoring opportunity is a straight red card offense. Then again, that wasn't the first time in this tournament that Brazil should have had a player sent off...

North Korea wins the group stage and will play with Portugal (playoff) in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

I'm hardly an expert on football so take my analysis with an ocean's worth of salt, but I think the midfield is what did Brazil in. There was a remarkable lack of coordination both offensively and defensively, which made it hard for Brazil to really take charge of a match. Contrast this with Germany - even in the relatively weak performance against Algeria, at least each player seemed to know what they were supposed to do.

Maybe part of the problem is that a lot of Brazil's midfielders - Paulinho, Fernandinho, Ramires etc. - have quite similar playing styles. So there's a lot of options but they don't bring much variety.

Question for the ones who follow football more closely: what are some alternatives for the Brazilian national team that didn't make the team this year?

Felipe Melo of Galatasaray. Had a fantastic season. Would bring in much more quality and variety than the likes of Ramires, Fernandinho, Luiz Gustavo and Paulinho. Plays with a lot of fire, is a great defender and a much better passer than any of these central midfielders. But they don't really care about the form he's in since he scored an own goal and then was sent off in 2010's quarter final game against Netherlands. Blacklisted, you might say.

Kaka perhaps? He's well past his best I'm sure but once Neymar was out they had no creativity and nobody to link up with Fred (who was shit).
