2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil

In this concrete situation, the contact is made because Robben wants it, not because the Mexico player is careless. In the Laws of the Game, the definition of careless doesn't include "gives the opponent an opportunity to intentionally stumble over your leg".

But it means

“Careless” means that the player has shown a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or that he acted without precaution

Wasn't this a normal offence anywhere else on the field? You're saying that there was no challenge at all from the defender and only from Robben. In my eyes, the contact is made from the defender, not from Robben.

And this is where I disagree. Robben can easily avoid the defender, but chooses not to.

But the action is from the defender in the first place. This is a clear penalty for me.

Even if Robben acts afterwards, he doesn't have anything to do at all with the action of the defender.

Well, still that doesn't automatically mean a penalty, does it? Robben took advantage.

No he didn't. It's a careless attempt to trip, from the defender. The defender is not trying to touch the ball but the player.

It's a different interpretation indeed. For me is a clear penalty. Clear as water.

Well, I've given my two cents on this match now. Time to change focus: Costa Rica vs Greece coming up!

Due to all the players in the Costa Rica squad who play or have played in the Norwegian league, my sympathy lies with them. Greece were positive in the last group match, unlike in their first two. This means I allow myself to hope for an open and entertaining game. Costa Rica are the biggest surprise of the entire 1st round, topping a group with Italy, Uruguay and England.

Vamos Costa Rica!

Although I don't want to see Greece in the quarter-finals I'll pay tribute to them via the medium of Sabaton:

Call to arms banners fly in the wind
For the glory of Hellas
Coat of arms reading "Freedom or death!"
Blood of king Leonidas

I don't think it was a penalty. So we were lucky at that moment.

We should have had a penalty in the first half though. After that equalizer I had a good feeling about how things were going, so I agree with Flash.

It was a soft one, it's understandable why it was given though. And yep, even if it wasn't a penalty, it was balanced out by the fact that Robben should have had penalty in the first half. Holland were in the ascendancy in the 20 or so minutes before their first goal, and to be honest, after Sneijder scored, Holland looked like a surefire bet to go on and win the game. They had a spring in their step, and a cutting edge that the Mexicans were lacking at that point in the match.

That was a tough match, but the dutch pulled it out of the fire, and did deserve the win in the end, I felt. There is a strong team spirit in the Holland team this time around, and I think it's been the lack of that in some of the previous world cups which has been their undoing. This team play as a team, not everyone playing for individual glory. :)

I still think Arjen Robben could pass the ball a bit more often.

Perhaps, but in general, I think this team has a much stronger team spirit than some of the previous Dutch teams in some of the more recent world cups.

Looking forward to the next game now! I hope Greece play the way they did against the Ivory Coast, and not the way they played in the first two matches. If they do that, then they have a good chance. If they play the way they did in the first two matches, I think Costa Rica will win reasonably comfortably. Most importantly, I hope it is another exciting match! :)

Disappointing first half. Both teams are too defensive-minded to make this truly exciting. They have pace when counterattacking, but lack precision.

But that cross for Greece's only proper chance was a great one. Can't be done better.

Not a terrible game, but certainly not much excitement on offer in the first half. Greece have been narrowly the better team though, and were the only team to make the opposing keeper work. Hoping for better in the second half.
