2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil

That penalty looked cheap. Still, Holland should have had one just before half time, so fair enough. The whole match considered, Oranje were the better team and deserve to be through. Mexico went missing after they took the lead.

Van Gaal clearly won this. Mexico was the better side most of the game, except the last 20 minutes.

Almost half of the on-target chances of the Netherlands were in the last 15 minutes, and 2 were goals.

In my opinion, it was a penalty. Robben is touched.

To be honest, I think Netherlands would run away with it if it went to the extra time. Mexicans didn't even really complain about the cheap penalty call, that 88th minute goal was too much to handle for them.

That doesn't matter, it's still a dive. Contact does not equal foul, and it's not the contact that makes Robben fall. He falls because he wants to.

It is a clear penalty. Contact can equal foul. It was a careless contact. But that's my opinion.

It is a foul if the opponent is tripped or otherwise impeded or hindered. Robben is neither. He isn't even forced to change direction. He goes down because he wants to, not because he is tripped (which he is not).

To use mathematical terms: Contact is necessary for a foul, but it is never sufficient.

Robben may have done a bad dive but...

a careless attempt to trip an opponent. Direct free kick, inside the area, penalty.

Another excellent game in this world cup! Over the piece, I'd say Holland just edged it, and narrowly deserved the win, but Mexico contributed a lot to the game. As for the penalty, I think it was a soft one, but I can see why it was given. Then again, Robben should have had a penalty near the end of the first half, so that's the way things go! Great game anyway, hope Greece VS Costa Rica is as exciting!

Have to say that the penalty was brilliantly taken from Huntelaar, considering he's hardly featured in this world cup. Poor Ochoa had no chance with it. And the same with Wesley "Tim Ripper Owens" Sneijder's shot, keeper had no chance with that either. Ochoa should have no problems finding a club after this tournament though! :)

Meh. Attempts to do something are only punished if it's violent conduct (punching, kicking ... or biting :p). You're not punished for a handball if you attempt to touch the ball with your hand but fail to do so.

Yup, we wouldn't see many penalties saved if they were all taken like that. And Sneijder's shot was a real rocket. A schoolboy goalkeeper would probably have jumped away from it.

Oh, come on. I'm trying to be impartial here.

In football, contact is quite limited. That was the main split of football in the first place. Contact football went into Rugby and all the other closer formats.

The law: careless, reckless or using excessive force.

Careless means done with or acting with insufficient attention; negligent

I don't think it was a penalty. So we were lucky at that moment.

We should have had a penalty in the first half though. After that equalizer I had a good feeling about how things were going, so I agree with Flash.

In this concrete situation, the contact is made because Robben wants it, not because the Mexico player is careless. In the Laws of the Game, the definition of careless doesn't include "gives the opponent an opportunity to intentionally stumble over your leg".
