18th Studio Album discussion

If this announcement isn't a subtle way of anticipating the band's retirement at the end of the RFYL World Tour (I confess I have that fear), it should indeed indicate a new album to be recorded and released in 2027. Hopefully, that's the way it goes. With more time for writing, recording, and producing, as well as Simon on drums (Nicko won't be back, unfortunately), we might get a very different album from the last few.

In the latest Metal Hammer there is a interview with Bruce and Steve.

Bruce has suggested to make a new album, with Simon on the drums, but Steve seems to be unsure. I guess it all depends on what he wants.
That’s the impression I get, that making albums is more than before a real burden for Steve. He said something along those lines regarding Book of Souls as a I recall. Whereas live is the fun bit it seems.

I think he also said Maiden had no plans after TFP and a few weeks or months later RFYL was announced, plus book plus documentary.

But yeah, at some point 'no plans' will actually mean no plans.

I know Nicko isn't as in the loop as he once was, but he did say a few months ago that he'd heard nothing at all about a new album. While they might snap out of it and suddenly jet into a studio it doesn't sound at all like they're bursting to do it.

Sadly, yes. Bruce Mandrake and sequel seems to have captured his imagination. Steve seems overly burdened by the idea of making a new Maiden album.

I wish someone could tell Steve that it doesn’t have to be a double album of 7 - 13 minutes intricate epics. That it could be a simpler set of compositions, and therefore less of a burden.

Alas, we must settle for the 6th year (out of the last 11 years) of a Maiden tour where the set list ends with Wasted Years…

I love how enthusiastic Bruce is about new music (maybe more about his solo stuff, but still) - but this response from Steve is very disappointing to me...

We don't know how the other members feel, but to say he haven't got time is not serious at all. Touring is more fun for them, but they have time for a whole year break, but not for new music?? He's said before that writing is stressful for him (in 2003; no matter if the material is short or long), but what will the band do without new music in the future? The last time they were enthusiastic about a new album was probably in 2010. It's sad.

Maybe Steve is unsure to record without Nicko, I understand that. His work is more than Bruce's, he co-writes almost all songs, but I'm really surprised to hear that of all band members Steve is not enthusiastic about new music, with all his ideas.

Can we read the whole interview?
One of the best live bands ever, thats for sure maiden mark
An undeniable fact!

I think Steve just can't predict what would fans like more. Sad to say this, but for drumming itself (maybe writing even) I think album would be better with Simon, although everyone would like it more with Nicko. I think album would have certain limitation cause of Nicko and I think that's what bothers Steve - play with Nicko until the end or preserve quality and continue with Simon.

I believe that Steve/artists also find it stressful to create, but an artist who has tons of ideas but no time/finds it too stressful to bring them out?
I don't know how believable I find that.
It's a pity that this wasn't a video podcast interview. I would have liked to have seen Steve's face when he said this. I wouldn't rule out that he is now amused by the debates about there not being another album. Then he will chuckle when he pulls the announcement of a new album out of his hat as a surprise in 2027.
Who knows? The whole tour announcement was something I think nobody predicted like this also.

Steve doesn't want to do a new album, because he doesn't have the time, and writing for a few weeks is too stressful for him? Weird. Doesn't sound like Steve, who says he always likes a challenge.

I'd rather bet he doesn't want to suggest they'll record anything because they have legal obligations (and doesn't want to take the focus off the tour) & doesn't know how Simon will perform in the studio with the band. I think a realistic scenario is that they want to record an album, but Simon is a question mark at this point, so a) he's not sure if anything will come of it, and b) some kind of contract prohibits him from mentioning potential albums while the tour promotion is still underway. The interviews at the end of the tour in 2026 will be more revealing, and I'd pay attention to those.
