I have said it before. Love dave but he improvises in some solos a lot. Even classic solos like NOTB with that extended note..and many others. I dont know if they dont remember the solos or they are just tired of playing the same solos. But he always nails the tropper solo. Janick does the same. For solos the best is adrian for sure.

I wish they would shake up the live arrangements a little and do a little bit of noodling and some guitar fills here and there that weren’t on the albums. Steve would probably have a heart attack though.

Still can’t believe we got an added guitar solo on Journeyman in 2003-04.

That's actually something I'd like metal bands to embrace in general. For whatever reason most bands are super rigid. If you look at other artists they are much more likely to shake up their songs and arrangements, sometimes even changing genres. Rick Astley for example has performed a brilliant version of Never Gonna Give You Up with the Foo Fighters, in the style of Smells Like Teen Spirit, and it works amazingly well. Or one of my favourite artists, legendary Greek rock cunt singer Vasilis Papakonstantinou, who has changed quite a few of his songs:

Listening to the first 30 seconds or so of each version should be enough to illustrate the differences. He also likes to do lengthy medleys/mash-ups of some of the classics, freeing up space in the setlists for new material or deep cuts. Though I guess this is even more controversial in metal circles and would cause angry responses lol

I’m likely in a minority here but I reckon the faster paced stuff live is way better. I can hear the album tempo any time, the fast pace makes everything so much more energetic and exciting. My only grumble with the new drummer.

And to compound my sins, I enjoy them messing with the solos a bit. As long as they’re recignisable, live improv is great. Makes it all sound fresh.

Aye, this is my vibe too. Sometimes when I read here I wish I knew that Janick took Adrians solo for a week in 1847 then gave it back and Adrian improvised a thing in 2015 but I just don't notice. I'm engrossed in the whole thing too much to care. There are rare times when I raise an eyebrow at an iconic solo that isn't quite right but generally I don't give a fuck.

No shade on you fuckers that do give a fuck, obvs, but unless it's Powerslave or Stranger then it's all a blur to me, it's the last couple of bars, or the first, or the middle that count, the significant bits, few notes here or there, the rest is fair game.

I think the boy Smith did a total change up for Wicker Man on the Legacy tour and I noticed that, it felt like a good, positive, lively change.

As regards Janick butchering old solos, I don't doubt it but I'd need someone to compile a comparison video for me to even stop listening to Steve and Nicko anyway. How can anyone care about a guitar solo when Nicko is tingling the ride? I ask you. How?

The guitars are important in Maiden, obviously but I've always held them as the gravy on the bones of the rhythm section. Am I crazy? Maybe. Don't care.
