News Burning Ambition Documentary

The movie finally came out in Germany, just got back from the premiere. I have quite a few gripes as far as editing and filmmaking in general go, but overall it was a good time. I had fun, and that's the most important thing.

Though, I can't let go of that one: When they were talking about having now three guitars at their disposal, they showed footage of RiR's Brave New World. The part right after the solos with the triple harmony. Yet the sound was the solos right before that part. What the hell was up with that? I get that solos are flashier, but that's the one part where they could've kept sound and video synced lol
Saw the documentary Friday night here in India. A few things:
1. How in the fucking world do you completely ignore them Somewhere in Time & Sevent Son era?! Like how dare you!! Those albums (esp Seventh Son) really highlighted Maidens work in the 80s.

2. They should have added more meat on Adrian leaving the band in 1990.

3. Talk about how Arry had the chance to play for West Ham or pursue a life in music.

4. Call out some of the earlier members (Paul Day, Doug Sampson, Dennis Wilcock, etc)

All in all, it was a pretty decent documentary but they could have made it slightly longer & add some of this information.

Loved experiencing their music in the theater though.

And they speaked about one era and put videos or pictures of other tour. SIT and SSOASS doesnt appear and when the do its maiden england video the extended songs( the worst) that was weird. But i liked the early days, the world conquer, the fall to the lowest level and the return of bruce and adrian and the brutal succes worldwide. And i liked to see genne simons saying when iron maiden play anywhere the stadium is full. Lets see this tour but until now since 2000 they are gone bigger and bigger. I doubt nobody of the band expected this level of succes in 1999

I thought the cinema release was going to be quite pointless, but the movie is clocking up weekend top ten box office placements in quite a few countries. It is obviously not a box office monster like the Michael biopic, but it has proved to have done pretty well for what is ultimately a niche documentary movie.

And it has got some decent reviews too….though I remain unmotivated to see it at the cinema myself, and will wait for streaming.

I am wonder if it actually gets any new fans….probably not yet, but maybe once on streaming.

Yeah the Gene Simmons interview was a shocker. There was this 1 kiss interview where the interviewer had worn a Maiden T-shirt and those idiots made him wear the tshirt inside out just cause it was a Maiden tshirt for a Kiss interview. Little things like these are seriously annoying.

Yes it was cool to see that guy speaking like this about iron maiden. And about the grunge. Now you cant feel the "fight" between the grunge and metal, because most of the people doesnt bother to listen to both

Why cover those things in great detail when you can have some zombie animations instead?

I actually liked those (though the quality could've been improved). My problem was that they didn't fully commit. For the first half you have quite a few of those animations, at reasonable points. Then they all but forget about them until we get a couple more towards the end. I would've liked them to continue with them throughout the entire thing.

I watched the film for the second time this weekend. Three packed showings in a row interestingly. When I saw it during the razzmatazz of the London premiere, I drank 3 complimentary trooper beers and a glass of Iron maiden darkest red beforehand! :edmetal: So I wasn't exactly objective, plus it was an absolutely huge screen, I was seated right at the front, and Bruce/Rod/H/Nicko were dotted around the auditorium

This time I was seated in the middle, and my wife could offer a non-metal fan's second opinion. Much more chilled.

Only part I (and she) thought was naff was the closing credits air guitar sequence. Thank f*@%k they didn't even ask me to partake in that!

Overall, the film works really well as a career-spanning narrative, with a far greater focus on the ups and downs any official narrative has ever managed. The film would work perfectly for a non-obsessive fan who hasn't followed them in minute detail for decades but loves Maiden.

With respect to everyone's opinions above, this was not an album-by-album tracking of Maiden career. For example: SIT & 7th Son are covered, but in the context of Adrian preferring their style and production, hence leaving in 1990. Crucially, the personality contrasts come out well, which is more valuable than an album-by-album account.

Maiden's official narrative as vetted by Steve would simply find it impossible to look retrospectively at the 1990s. I can't see how he would look back objectively. Burning Ambition must be credited for venturing where Steve never could. History DVD Part 4 never came & never will.

Most importantly of all, I am relieved with my 4 appearances (and so was my wife!!). Phew.

Agreed, but also the american guy saying Maiden had to sink to rock bottom to come back to the top, was a bit OTT, they played to 50,000 in a stadium in Brazil with Blaze, both albums were number 1 in Greece. Relatively, it's obviously Maiden's least successful period, but it's hardly rock bottom anywhere other than America.

That was Ross Halfin just saying that Bruce did not give a shit during the 1993 tour.

There's also an MTV clip from Rome I think that I've seen before, where he was singing great, so it was a bit selective when his heart wasn't in it. I'm a bit sceptical about Halfin's story, because you would think that Wembley would be one of the big gigs with media there where he might have put on a show.

I dont think the whole tour was that terrible during the rising hell video he sung some songs different but still good but yes he sounded like he doesnt want to sing anymore. But i think even in that situation he sounded good at least on that video. I will check some of the shows the viena show maybe its the worst?,

The official story Harris et al have told is that Bruce did not give a shit at low profile gigs but was putting on a show at the big gigs. Perhaps Ross Halfin is misremembering the venue in question, as he probably attended a good number of shows on that tour.

I recall a metal hammer live review from 1998 in which they speculated “Maiden’s future will look like Motörhead’s, where the albums become less important but live remains vital.” Or words to that effect.

I agree with you it wasn’t rock bottom in all territories yet. But a third and even fourth Blaze album probably would have made that metal hammer speculation come truer. To be fair to that American guy in the film, it was truer in the USA already compared to elsewhere.

Even in europe with xfactor they played in small places than with bruce. During virtual xi seems they changed to a bigger places but during xfsctor they went down.not in south america that is true.
