Luckily, I think he can kind of keep things going with the episodic vignettes that come out on the Youtube channel. Advances the lore and can just film it right from Sweden.
 
Not the lore per se, but the soap opera side of it. There are plans for more comics and other stuff. I can imagine that he wants to go back to what Ghost were doing during the Infestissumam/Meliora era: releasing some videos presenting the world of Ghost, but on a much smaller scale. One year ago he hinted that Perpetua won't be the last Papa, so I guess that at some point we'll get an explanation why they got rid off him.

I think that the Chapters got much worse post-Prequelle era. They stopped being funny, they started feeling forced. Sometimes they led to nothing. Their only purpose is to attract the Tiktok guys who'll come up with an insane theory for each and every video.

Maybe that's why he doesn't like it anymore. Some fans have been focusing on the lore more than on the music. Tobias is an entertainer and a cinema lover, but music is his main thing. If your audience spends so much time analyzing videos that are supposed to be silly while not being equally interested in your music, I bet it might not feel so great. Especially since it's very clear that the lore was never supposed to be such a big thing. Tobias started thinking about it when the record company asked him "Ok, so what's the story?" after hearing Opus Eponymous. It's a side thing and at this point it's not as important as it used to be.

Also, he films them in California/England. The only videos filmed in Sweden are some of the band's music videos (Umbra) and maybe some older material (The Summonings?).

He'll be back in ~2 years with another album, but for some reason Ghost fans think that the hiatus will last at least a decade. Personally, I just hope that we'll get the live album/DVD from Mexico sooner than later. Tobias earned his break, although I'm not 100% sure if this is the right moment for stopping. The decision to tour America twice was a big mistake, but ending the whole cycle after 10 months of touring (also in the context of Skeleta's success) doesn't sound good to me. The album deserved better. I mean, today marks the first anniversary of Satanized. And the Skeletour is done. No more concerts in the nearest future. Sounds so weird, doesn't it?
The good side of this situation is that maybe he'll realize that the US shouldn't be the favored audience and that he should treat his fans more equally.
 
Today being one year since Satanized debuted and knowing that Skeleta era is already over is crazy. It really ended with a whimper. The biggest and most successful album had the smallest tour. I still can't believe we didn't get the European 2nd leg and rest of the world that was promised.

I think the Mexico concert movie will come out in 2027/28 and new album in 2030. We shall see.
 
The original plan was to release the DVD in 2027. But the original plan for the Skeleta era was also to finish the tour in December 2026, so the release might come sooner than that.

The US got 3 legs the last album cycle, it will always be the favored audience. The biggest mistake Tobias made was custom designing a stage that costs far too much to transport to other countries, most bands are doing the opposite to cut touring costs. When they do return I expect a stripped back version for sure.

I do think the break will be much longer than 2 years, he admitted he is having creative burnout and if Ghost lose all the momentum he is fine with that, which does suggest he is planning on a longer hiatus.
 
So… after the hiatus, he’ll decide to return to his roots, release his own No Prayer, and onstage he’ll play in front of stacked Marshall amps. That would suck if Skeleta really turns out to be his Seventh Son.

It was a mix of both. You can transport the stage set, but to do that, you need the tour to be profitable.

The 2nd US leg wasn't as successful as it could/should have been. Which means that continuing the tour would be risky, financially speaking. Tobias said that to afford touring, 10 gigs per 1 leg need to be sold out dates.

Any >1 year long hiatus will be a longer hiatus, considering Forge's modus operandi.

The Opus Eponymous era ended in 2012 - Infestissumam arrived in April 2013
Then the last leg of the Infestissumam cycle ended in autumn 2014 - Meliora was released in August 2015
Papa III's last gig took place in autumn 2017 - Rats! On the Road started in May 2018
The Prequelle era ended right before the pandemic started (march 2020), so Impera was delayed and was eventually released almost exactly 2 years later - in March 2022
Imperatour ended in October 2023 - Skeleta arrived in spring 2025

Pretty much every of the albums mentioned above were also supplemented by an additional release (an EP or a live album).

Realistically speaking, Tobias has to write new material; which is going to take some time. He's not gonna start writing anytime soon, although I suspect he might start working on the new material in 2027. The question is: how long will it take for him to have the whole thing complete? It might be a while, considering the fact that he also needs to record it. Then it's gonna be necessary to press CDs and vinyls. He's doing some other projects now, which may be helpful when it comes to getting his creativity back. It's totally possible that another record will arrive in 2028, although it depends on many factors.

He can't wait too long since he can't afford Ghost to become and outdated band. The last thing he wants Ghost to be is a nostalgia act. He's absolutely not interested in that. Not to mention that if Skeletour wasn't a profitable tour, his recent income was lower than expected. He's not an underground artist by any means, but he still needs money.

The good thing is that - if the rumors are true - the Loma Vista deal has expired. It was a big problem for Tobias and he's kinda made it clear several times that LV was a very limiting option for Ghost. The next album will probably be released by his own record company and with no businessmen telling him what to do (and what not to do), he might be more motivated to work on new music.
 
Tobias' finances are strong. His Swedish company (and there might be other offshore companies on top of this) made a profit, as in straight to his pockets, of 2.5 million euros in 2024, 2 something million in 2023 and he has an additional 2.5 million euros cash in the company. We will have to wait a while for the 2025 financial books. Hell, even the covid year of 2021 was enough for him to live a comfortable life. He can afford to take a break and be with his wife and children.

One of his recent interviews he mentions being fine with Ghost losing all the momentum they have created, and was saying being honest to himself the door is open for a Ghost return but this is definitely a hiatus with no timeline on when that might be. He also admits to creative burn out with Ghost and wants to pursue other projects.

Now I don't think Ghost is over, I do think it will be at least 4-5 years before they do eventually return.

Maybe Ghost and Nightwish can do a joint reunion tour in 2030.
