The Helsinki show was all in all a fun event. Maiden's Stadium shows gather a lot of casual fans, so I got to meet a bunch of old schoolmates I haven't seen on twenty years. Also got to meet Mr. Mind Ruler himself. A great pleasure, as we were IMBB-regulars back in the Early 2000s. And as fate would have it, Dennis Stratton happened to walk just by us, so Mindy and I got to shake his hands. What an honour as well!
The show in itself was fine. Eleventh IM concert for me, and a kind of curious one, mainly for the changes in personnel and stage show. I was wondering whether these changes would feel strange or improve the show; after all, I had witnessed all the songs in the set live apart from Killers.
Phantom, Powerslave, ROTAM, and Seventh Son were absolute highlights for me. Powerful performances and Bruce was great in each one. Hallowed was another schorcher, and was probably Simon's finest spot: I was really happy to hear the shuffle back. Aces High was musically great, but Bruce just doesn't cut. No need to play that again.
Individually speaking the band did a great job. Davey, H, and Jan all had great solos throughout the show, Steve is Steve, and Bruce had his highs and lows.
I really admire Simon's attitude, liked his playing, but the boots of Old McBrain are huge to fill. Nicko's finesse, constistency and swing are almost impossible to replicate to the fullest, and I also feel that his absense is felt in the band dynamics and spirit. There were a number of flubs in the songs, rushes and drags. It would be unfair to blame it on Simon, it will take a number of gigs for the band to jel properly.
Setlist desperately needed a real rarity or two more. Still Life here or Infinite Dreams there would have made all The difference to the greatest hits set, which was a bit stale compared to Legacy and Future Pasta shows. I wasn't too crazy about the screens and stage tbh.
In sum, not one of my favourite gigs, due to the ridiculously high standards this band has set over the years, but even then a fine concerts
