Judas Priest

JUDAS PRIEST Singer 'Would Love To' Make A Black Metal Album - Jan. 21, 2008

JUDAS PRIEST singer Rob Halford recently spoke to UK's Metal Hammer magazine about his aspirations to one day make a "black metal" record. "Oh, yeah, some day I'd love to, but it's all about finding the time," he said. "I'm metal 24-7. Ihsahn [guitarist/vocalist of Norwegian black metal legends EMPEROR] has been a good friend of mine for many, many years and we've had conversations about trying to do something together. A few of the DIMMU BORGIR guys are also urging me to try. So if I did give it a go, it would be with guys of that calbre. I'll be honest, I love that music but I've no idea what venturing into that territory might sound like. Ihsahn's attitude is, 'So why not have a go?' And he's absolutely right. That's what life's all about. What's the point of staying in your safe little comfort zone?"

JUDAS PRIEST has scheduled the following dates:

June 02 - Icehall -Helsinki, Finland
June 05 - Sweden Rock - Sölvesborg, Sweden
June 07 - Trondheim Rock Festival - Trondheim, Norway
June 08 - Bergenshall - Bergen, Norway
June 11 - Rockhal - Luxembourg
June 17 - Cez Arena - Ostrava, Czech Republic
June 23 - Philipshalle - Dusseldorf, Germany
June 24 - Zenith - Munich, Germany
June 27 - Graspop Metal Meeting - Dessel, Belgium
June 28 - Bang Your Head - Balingen, Germany
June 29 - Gods Of Metal - Bologna, Italy
July 01 - Smederevo Festival, Belgrade, Serbia
July 02 - Dom Sportova, Zagreb, Croatia
July 03 - Liberec Arena, Prague, Czech Republic

JUDAS PRIEST's tour will include shows where the group's entire upcoming "Nostradamus" album (based on the legendary 16th century prophet Nostradamus) will be performed as well as concerts featuring the band's classic songs.

Rock My Monkey: Is there any truth at all to the rumors of an Iron Maiden/Judas Priest co-headlining tour?

Rob Halford: I don’t know. I think again this is just the passion of the metal community as we call it. A lot of people would love to see something like that happening. You know, I myself would think it would be a great thing. I can remember years ago when we were doing some of our tours of America that we did with Maiden and we had a great time. And of course both bands are significant more than ever in the history of heavy metal music. And so that’s just something I guess that the management and everybody else would have to discuss more than anything. But yeah, I think it would be really cool. I mean, I’ve always had a dream that one of my ultimate metal moments would be to have Black Sabbath, Priest and Maiden together on the same bill, and I think that would be just phenomenal. But you know, sometimes it take s a while for dreams to come true.

Phenomenal, yes ... so long as they lock Sharon and her kids at home. We know what happened last time.

Or, how about Heaven & Hell with Priest and Maiden? That might work.

"That might work" - Pretty much an understatement don't you think  :p
Metal aficionados will certainly appreciate that kind of gig.
I'm sure they'll have a phenomenal time. As long as there won't be eggs.

Heaven and Hell, Priest, and Maiden?  I'd sell my soul for that...

And definitely Heaven and Hell instead of Black Sabbath; as Bruce said once (something along these lines), "they're the real Black Sabbath, forget the other guy."

Okay, I need advice on this band a bit.  Priest is starting their tour in June, and I'll hopefully be going to their gig.  However, I have only limited experience with the band.  I don't think I can absorb their whole production in four months, so could you guys recommend what albums I should listen to to get the maximum enjoyment of their gig.  I.e. What albums provide most of their live material?  Basically, what are their Hallowed Be Thy Name, Run to the Hills, Fear of the Dark, and Iron Maiden, etc?

I have Angel of Retribution as a cd, and British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance as MP3s.

Oh, and what's up with big metal bands starting their tours in Finland?  Megadeth just did it, and apparently Priest's first show will also be in Helsinki.  Even the same venue, in fact!

Here's some of their most popular live tracks (no order):

Beyond The Realms Of Death
Green Manalishi (With The Two-Pronged Crown)
Breaking The Law
Living After Midnight
United
Diamonds And Rust
The Hellion/Electric Eye
Turbo Lover
Painkiller

You might want to get their albums Unleashed In The East (1979) and Priest... Live! (1987) for a start.

My second favourite metal band, and I'm sure there are other forum members with the same idea.

Perun gave you a good setlist impression (plus check these live albums he mentioned). Most of their albums are pretty much worth inspecting, also if only one or even no track will be featured on the setlist. Priest made 15 studio albums of which 13 with Rob Halford. Number 16 (naturally also with Halford) should come out this year. It is rumoured that Priest will play shows performing their whole latest effort "Nostradamus", a la Maiden did with AMOLAD, but I doubt Priest will do this on festivals.

To explain how I experience Priest (leaving out Ripper's past for the moment):

70's era: dark, diverse, moody, best lyrics.

80's era: more compact songs (simpler structures - easier lyrics) - great catchy melodies and excellent guitar work. I think that the A-side of the album "Defenders of the Faith" (1984) is the best ever A-side I have ever heard (including all Maiden albums)!

90's era: their masterpiece "Painkiller" which is in my opinion the best combination of aggression and melody, ever made in metal.

So if you happen to come across studio albums:

From the 90's (my favourite album per decade in bold letters):
Painkiller   (A must!! I'm convinced you'll like it, esp. since you're (also) into powermetal!)

From the 80's:
Defenders of the Faith (because of the brilliant A-side, this is my favourite 80's album of Priest)
Screaming For Vengeance
British Steel

From the 70's:
Well, I like all, especially Sin After Sin, but perhaps their debut is the worst one, so leave that one alone for a while.

I couldn't resist searching on this forum and I found an old post of mine, in another topic, reacting on Perun's somewhat shorter comments (in blue) on 8 Priest albums. Perun mentioned his favourite songs as well (not with all 8 as you'll see; no: there is no Priest track called "Never Mind" haha!). With his permission I repost this here, to get some idea and see how people can look differently at these works.

-----------------

When I read Perun's list I also felt the need to tell there are way more cool Priest tracks for me.

A few reactions from my side (however, this topic might turn into a Priest-topic):

"Rocka Rolla - Never mind"
Run of the Mill has such a nice build-up ! Downing's solo is really exciting. This album is a pretty calm album but it has its moments still.

"Sad Wings Of Destiny - The Ripper, Victim Of Changes, Dreamer Deceiver"
You sure mentioned the best tracks from the album, but Deceiver, Tyrant & Island of Domination I like a lot as well. Epitaph was a growing-song to me. Later I started liking it because of its mood and the vocals.

"Sin After Sin - Sinner, Diamonds And Rust"
I think I'd give every track (besides Last Rose of Summer) 4 or 5 stars. This album features excellent drums of Simon Philips who was only 19 at the time of recording. Let Us Prey/Call for the Priest is special to me because of the harmonies in the mid-part, and I think this is the first real speed/power metal kind of song ever created. This mid-piece is really the basis of the prime-elements in Helloween's music. Starbreaker has a cool guitar riff, Dissident Aggressor I like because of its intense aggression, the vocals, the riffs. Last, but not least, an honorable mention for Here Come The Tears. What an emotion, what a melodies, what a built-up and what a vocals. Such deep and low vocals (check with headphones how it goes from left to right and back) and later high ones. Very impressing.

"Killing Machine - Delivering The Goods, Hell Bent For Leather, Green Manalishi, Running Wild"
This is the first album consisting of short tunes. I like the ones you mentioned (my three favourites are definitely the last three you mentioned) but most others I like as well.

"British Steel - Metal Gods, Breaking The Law, Living After Midnight"
I think that Rapid Fire, Grinder & The Rage also belong to this subdivision of songs and the last three tracks of the album I like a lot as well.

"Point Of Entry - Heading Out To The Highway, Desert Plains"
Might be Priest's worst 80's album, but strangely enough I enjoy Heading Out.. terribly much in a live situation. Solar Angels isn't a bad track either.

"Turbo - Turbo Lover, Locked In, Out In The Cold"
I despize the lyrics of this album, but some tunes have such catchy guitar riffs and vocals that I can't despize the album itself. I agree with your choice, but Reckless (great chorus and solos!) and Hot For Love belong to this list.

"Ram It Down - Never mind."
Hehehe, well. The drums on this album are very bad computer simulated drums in my ears. The crappy tracks on this album are terrible. If I was in the band I would have dumped the ideas of Love Zone, Come And Get It & Love You To Death immediately into the trash can. But the other 7 tracks aren't bad. Actually, I think that the title track is amazing, Heavy Metal has good parts and I like the intro as well! Hard As Iron has an excellent midpiece. Blood Red Skies' atmosphere I like a lot. A bit of a Blade Runner feel. I think it's a strong song with great moments, the keyboards (or guitar synths) really lifting it all to higher level.

I stand by what I said.  :innocent:

There are almost always some more tracks on those albums that I like too, and what should be important to note is that those that aren't listed are great albums from start to finish. Everyone should listen to and worship Stained Class, Screaming For Vengeance, Defenders Of The Faith, Painkiller and Angel Of Retribution.

Though it is probably heresy to recommend a "greatest hits" compilation in response to this question, if you truly are getting introduced to the band, I would suggest giving a listen to The Essential Judas Priest.  It is part of the same "Essential" series that published The Essential Iron Maiden, but I think the track selection is much, much better for Judas Priest than it was for Iron Maiden.  All of the songs from Perun's list are on this compilation, as are most of the songs on Forostar's list.  Obviously, people will have their favorite album tracks that are not included on a Best Of compilation, and most people appreciate full albums rather than such compilations.  But, if you don't want to spend money on a half dozen albums and you want to hear the classics so you know them at the concert, I think this is a really good option.  Again, don't let any disappointment you may have had with The Essential Iron Maiden prejudice your decision to check out The Essential Judas Priest.  The latter is the best collection of classic studio tracks out there.

I also agree with Perun's and Forostar's recommendation of Unleashed in the East.  It is a great live album -- though, as noted elsewhere in this forum, many of Halford's vocals were overdubbed afterward in the studio.  Bear in mind that it is a single-disc release and does not contain the same breadth of songs as The Essential Judas Priest (13 tracks vs. 34).

I've no idea about their albums because I have none

but I first heard : You Got Another Thing Comin', Breakin' The Law and Living After Midnight.

I'd have to say, Hell Bent For Leather (Killing Machine), The Ripper (Sad Wings Of Destiny), Before The Dawn (Killing Machine), Beyond The Realms of Death (Stained Class) and The Green Manalishi (Killing Machine) are some of the only few I've heard as my dad told me: "Their earlier work was the best"

I love Hell Bent For Leather and The Ripper, So those would be my two :)

JUDAS PRIEST will release its 16th studio album, "Nostradamus", on June 17 via Epic in North America and a day earlier internationally. The double-disc set that tells the story of the 16th century prophet, Michel de Nostredame (whose name is often "Latinized" as Nostradamus) is PRIEST's first-ever concept album, and was recorded throughout 2006 and 2007 at Old Smithy Studio in the UK.

JUDAS PRIEST's 2009 tour will include shows where the group's entire "Nostradamus" album will be performed while this year's concerts are expected to focus primarily on the band's classic songs.

Today I bought tickets. 49 euro and 10 cents per ticket.  :ninja:

Anyway, the whole show starts at 14.15, so I can expect a lot of metal:

Bands:

Airbourne        14.15-15.00
Iced Earth        15.30-16.30
Cavalera Consp.17.00-18.00
Judas Priest      18.30-20.00

(By the way, if Holland becomes second in their group at Euro 2008 then I'll miss their quarter final  :S )
