Worst Iron Maiden Song

Age of innocence, weekend warrior and Can I play with madness are the only songs I tend to skip more often than I listen to them. Not necessarily the worst songs, but the most annoying ones, definitely.

Not counting the B-sides, it is probably "Virus" or some undistinguishable stuff from X Factor or AMOLAD. "Age of Innocence" (for its crass lyrics and missed soft rock chorus) belongs here too.

Wasting Love is absolutely the worst Iron Maiden song, it's not that good lyrically or musically and it's an attempt to commercialize and play by MTV rules. From Here to Eternity fits in same category. At least it doesn't have acoustic guitar riffs.

I actually don't mind Wasting Love, I find it better than most of the FOTD album. I think the lyrics are good, powerful at times, and they are delivered well. I don't see it as a cynical attempt at commercialisation. Bruce was writing that kind of thing anyway for his solo stuff and much of the album veers closer to rock than metal so it's not totally out of place. If it was on No Prayer or TXF it might raise my suspicions. Still, I don't want to see it or its like played live these days, it's not strictly 'Maiden' as I like them but I still wouldn't skip it. However, live versions generally suck, in my opinion. The bends are always a bit off and it sounds out of tune. Most likely not Davey's fault.

In terms of blatant commercialisation or 'selling out' I think its very hard to call. I used to be much more cynical but now I generally sit on the fence. Take the Chilis for example. When they were young and fucked up they made much better music, IMO. With Californication they hit a formula that gave them 3 or 4 hit singles in the UK. Ok, the less crazy, more basic, melodic, 'emotional' formula/style can be seen pre-Californication but it was solidified here and has been been repeated ad nauseam ever since. I used to see this as a straight up sell out when I was younger but surely its inevitable that clean (ish) 40 year olds are going to produce different music than fucked up 20 year olds. Maybe its just a coincidence that their newer style has increased their profile and it was not a conscious decision to become 'bigger' or 'more successful.' Only the individuals know their intentions. Either way, they are now pish, IMO.

AMOLAD does not contain any bad song... the problem is that it does not contain any good one either.
*coughcough The Legacy, Different World, For the Greater Good of God, Lord of Light, Brighter Than a Thousand Suns, The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg, The Pilgrim cough*

I completely agree, except for the fact that all of the songs are good.

But kinda depends how you define good. Maiden sing a lot about war and war is typically bad. So longest day is bad except for the fact that it is a good song. Same for brighter than a thousand suns. Nukes are bad so the song is bad but the fact is that the song is good. So there you have it. No bad song in sight just all good.
