Necrophagist sound way more different than the other bands. They're a tech death band led by a Turkish immigrant. "Fermented Offal Discharge" is a great song from them.

Holy Wars depends much more on rhythm than melody but it's a crime to say that stuff like Tornado of Souls, Hangar 18, Countdown to Extinction, Peace Sells, Good Mourning/Black Friday aren't melodic.

Well... they were all right. You have a pretty strange definition of melodic though. I want to hear guitars that sound a bit more like guitars to be honest. Everything's very, very mixed & compressed sounding.

I hadn't heard any Soilwork or Scar Symmetry before. Amorphis I've stumbled across before because of the Thousand Lakes Kalevala connection, which had caught my attention previously. Necrophagist have quite a lot of interesting stuff going on there. I take it that is a drum machine?

Overall though, I'm having a lot of problems with all of the vocals. I do genuinely want to hear what the words are. In fact, I'm not really sure if I really need to listen to music with vocals anymore. Quite a lot of that reminded me of Carcass, a band I did used to listen to in the early 90's. (I appreciate Amorphis are also from this time.) I appreciate the musicianship with all these bands, but I'm not really feeling anything when listening to them.

Whatever it is, it isn't about the technical sound of the guitars.

I'm just saying they're not exactly Maiden melodic sounding. As I said Foro, I find it quite difficult to dip in & out of anything. If I'm quite taken with something, I'm totally fanatical about it. Music is the same. If I don't really hear anything that new or interesting about a band or music, I just don't really engage with it very much; even if it is really decent. But if I like something, I listen to everything they've ever done. Chronological order is, of course, important. And lead guitar work!
